AppleInsider reports that Apple issued a note to its retail stores yesterday stating that no further orders for a number of the company's desktop computers would be accepted, suggesting that supplies of the machines are running dry ahead of product updates. The note refers to all iMac configurations and the low-end Mac mini as being affected.
For example, Apple Retail on Monday issued an advisory to its stateside brick-and-mortar shops in which it noted that further orders for many of its existing desktop SKUs would go unhonored and that stores should not expect those models to be restocked.

More specifically, the Mac maker made the remarks in respect to all four retail configurations of its all-in-one aluminum iMac line and the low-end $599 Mac mini, which sports half the memory and roughly one-third the storage capacity of its pricier cousin.
The report also notes that Amazon has recently run out of all configurations of both the iMac and Mac mini for direct shipment and is now only offering the machines for sale through its third-party affiliate sellers.

Recent reports have suggested that iMac and MacBook updates are due in the near future, although little information about upgrades to the Mac mini, which is approaching the end of its typical lifecycle, has surfaced in recent months.

My bet is that the lower-end mini is being discontinued completely, much like the lower-end Apple TV. Maybe the higher-end one stays the same but just gets a price drop. Why else discontinue the lower one but not the higher-end one?

So the bottom end mini will be outfitted with a Xeon and become the new top end mini? ;)

Hopefully today is the day!

They don't really need an event. I guess there was an October event last year for the laptops, but there might not be a need for an event.

Why would Apple need an 'event' to release hardware upgrades alone? Personally, it seems like the main use of the events are to showcase software changes. For hardware-only changes, I think the website is sufficient.

Heck, those big events can't be cheap either. Save the dough, Apple, and pass the savings in price cuts!

The high-end mini will become the low-end mini because they're finally introducing a new high-end Blu-Ray mini. Yay!

Well, one can hope anyway.

Blu-ray. Every product's going Blu-Ray. Finally...

Not a chance in hell. The absolute best we can hope for is a BTO option Blu-Ray drive on the highest end iMacs, MBPs and Pros, and I still don't think we are going to see that for another year. The Steve is a stubborn one.

The best thing they could do is roll out Nahalem in the iMac, but at this point I'm not even optimistic about that one.

We are probably going to see a minor chassis redesign of the iMac, LED backlit display and lower prices.

And not much else.

It's disappointing to see Apple so poorly able to execute on their momentum in the market.

Seeing that I have my iMac (white gen 7600) sold - being picked up this Saturday, I am nearly ready for a new one. Then I will part with my less than year old MBP and get back to just a true desktop.

Hoping for a much better discreet video and blu-ray drive.

Oh yeah? Then what else could it possibly be? Their whole computer's line's about to get an update right after they release Snow Leopard and right before Christmas. If you've got a better guess, I'd love to hear it.

EDIT: You edited yours with your ideas, but it's still way too small an update. Even BTO Blu-Ray is still Blu-Ray. Nothing wrong with that.

Am I the only one who doesn't care about Blu-ray?

I would like a spec bump on the mini, to a quad core processor, and maybe a little better GPU.

You have to realize that people were expecting the same 'big things' from the last iMac refresh and it turned out to be nothing more than a spec bump.

Apple is extremely reluctant to embrace Blu-Ray because they view it as a transient technology that will eventually be supplanted with cloud based delivery of media (they aren't building a billion dollar data center in North Carolina to sell Blu-Ray movies from the studios).

I do see them eventually offering it as a BTO since they are beginning to look foolish by not adopting the premier AV technology for playback and authoring of high definition content.

If Apple releases an iMac with a Blu-Ray drive option AND a mobile i7 processor then they have a sale with me. A matte screen option would be icing on the cake.

Apple moves glacially though, such things are highly unlikely, although I do think we'll see a new chassis and some other minor new features from them this go round.

I just don't see Apple releasing Blu-Ray drives on their products until they have software ready (Snow Leopard / iLife / QT X / FC / etc.) ready to at least read and possibly write to the drives.

I'm hoping that SL updates along with iLife 10 will happen soon and support Blu-Ray but I'm not holding my breath.
