Xeon based iMac here I come.

You should be hoping for an i7 mobile based iMac. The chance of a Xeon iMac showing up are exactly 0%.

The chip generates double the heat of current iMac processors, uses more power, requires a larger chassis, etc.

The i7 mobile makes 100X more sense for the iMac (and for the Mini).

You have to realize that people were expecting the same 'big things' from the last iMac refresh and it turned out to be nothing more than a spec bump.

Holiday money's gonna be tight this year for lots of people, but Blu-Ray is one thing that will still be on people's list. Apple will lose lots of hardware sales if they don't even offer the option.

The L5520 and L5506 are only 15 TDP higher than the Core i7 Mobile chips, while being @ 2.26Ghz and 2.13Ghz, respectively. With improved/modified cooling, it could work. I wouldn't say 0% chance.

Okay, .1%.

Honestly the Xeon offers nearly nothing over the mobile i7, which has some great architectural improvements.

Strange

What seems strange here is that Apple have told the stores this. Normally when a new model comes out, the stores claim to be totally shocked and not be up to speed with the new models because "they know as much as the consumers do". They also normally have loads of the old stock to clear at reduced prices (this will presumably make the bargains less likely). Apple giving stores notice of constraints is not normal is it?

No, it's not. Which might point to more than a spec bump.

It also might be that the retail stores have started pushing back about getting ambushed by angry customers the day after a new model releases.

Store remodels?

I was in my local Apple store last night. There was a sign stating that the first week in October the store would be closed for a remodel. I asked one of the employees about it and he said it was just a small thing, a few new tables. But why would the store close for a week?

I wonder if this is tied to the rumored new offerings? Anyone else know of stores closing around that time?

The Mac Mini with Blu-ray will be a kick ass computer :D

Actually an Apple TV, in black, with a blu-ray drive, would have a home in my entertainment system in a heartbeat. I know a few others who might look at it again if it comes with its own drive.

What killed it before for me a few friends (not sure how serious some were)

It only came in white, show me an entertainment system in white... really

It had no on board disc, meaning yet another set of connectors needed.

iPhone Activation Center. That's all.

Kinda like a PS3 slim...

AppleTV & Mini Unite

What is the Mini & Apple TV become one - throw in a BD player and you have your living room box. With the iTunes 9 home sharing onboard that is a step closer to a media server/centre?
Hey why not pass the iPhone/iPod games over to it at the same time!
I keep looking at the Apple TV but still have not bought one due to price / limited function.

P.S Output through HDMI and i'll buy one.

Moon on a stick i know, i know :D

I would not expect much more!

WOnder if the Mini sees anything beyond a processor bump?

I could see a Core 2 Quad going as it would be cheap and easy for Apple. Beyound that I don't expect much more than tweaks. I just think this month Apple will be focused on iMac.

When Apple Insider shared info from their Taiwain sources on the new iMacs that had already gone into production (already rolling off the assembly line) they were definitely indicated to be new dual core models.

So... maybe we will see a redesigned chassis with new displays, etc, and the jump to quad core next spring?

I don't see why they share the same case between the apple tv and mini. The mini was neat when it first came out but the form factor would not be hurt being a little bigger. The key to it for me was its height.

Xeon L3426 - 45W TDP. It was discussed last week in the iMac rumor thread....

I agree that it's possible but I still think that Nahalem mobile makes more sense.

I don't know what prices are on the new i7 mobile CPUs but bulk pricing (lots of 1000 or more) on the L3426 appear to be ~$300 which seems far too high for the iMac.

oh, please, apple, combine the apple tv and mac mini into a super hybrid media hub. create an iphone-like sdk to allow app development and give it a physical media drive (blu-ray, anyone). either kill the apple tv or bring it to the next level.

If they put a BD ROM drive in the Mini along with an HDMI port it would only be a software jump away from being able to replace the Apple TV completely.

Am I the only one who doesn't care about Blu-ray?

I would like a spec bump on the mini, to a quad core processor, and maybe a little better GPU.

Same here, I care very little about Blu-ray and if it means machines will be cheaper without it then ever better. I can see everything getting a boost, but not really a design change. I thought all the upgrades would happen in January but maybe it will be sooner after all? Unless the BIG update happens in January and these are just speed bumps.

You don't know what your talking about then the L3426 runs a 1.86 GHz (turbo to 3.2GHz) and is priced at $284. The i7 mobile starts at 1.6Ghz (turbo to 2.8GHZ) and is priced at $380.

The Xeon gives better performance, lower cost, at the same amount of heat as compared to the mobile i7.

i don't care about blu-ray on my/a computer either.... i'm don't sit in front of my computer now watching movies (or tv shows) on it (that's why i have a nice tv in the computer room....)

If the prices are as high as you say, then yes it will be a problem (I anticipated them being noticeably lower).

I just don't see Apple putting a desktop Xeon chip in their iMac and completely different quad core lineup in their Macbook line later on.

All of this, in the end, means that in all likelihood the iMac will continue to be C2D for at least another six months.

It is also more polite to point out that you don't agree with someone then to post that "they don't know what they are talking about".
