So I bought a MacBook Air for my wife during the Best Buy black friday sale. It's remained in the packaging and never opened as I plan to give it to her next week. Is the warranty going to only have ~11 months left when she first powers it up? Or will the warranty start the 12 month clock upon first use? Thanks!

Warranty will start at the purchase date. Now if your MacBook Air stops working in December 2017 (more than a year after purchase, but not a year since she started using it), there's a reasonable chance the the Apple Store would agree to repair it under warranty.

When does Apple warranty officially start when you buy genuine accessories? I know for big retail chains it often starts the day you buy it, but I’ve seen iPhones start their warranty when they get activated. How about university bookstores or online retailers (such as Adorama, BHPhoto). I know for sure when you buy from a reseller scumbag it’s already started (fleaBay, etc.)

I guess any Apple authorized retailer online or offline will report the sale date correctly? Are all university book stores by default Apple authorized retailers?

Stores don't report sales dates for warranty purposes. The sale date is on the consumer's receipt.
