If I buy an imac, and there is a problem within the first year, can I return it for an exchange or repair?

Standard warranty is one year, you can purchase AppleCare which gives you an additional 2 years for a total of three years of coverage.

In both cases, the warranty is basically for apple to repair the computer, though in rare cases they will replace it (with a like machine)

Would I have to bring it to an Apple store or would I be able to send it in via mail?

The times i've tried sending it in for repairs while not under AppleCare, but still under the 1 year limited warranty, they have wanted me to either carry it to an Apple Store or premium reseller or shipping it in to a authorized repair centre.... The first few times they wanted me to pay for the return cost, but that is against swedish consumer law so I made them budge on that after a while.

If you have a local apple store, bring it in for warranty work. You'll need to make an appointment with an apple genius but I think driving it to a store is better, at least for me.

Apple will provide warranty service during that year, regardless of where you originally purchased it from.

Regarding returning it for an exchange, that'd have to be done where you originally purchased it from, and would be subject to their return/exchange policies.

In the UK consumer law effectively gives a 6 year warranty (with some ifs and buts). I've had Apple repair iMacs after 3 /4 years, but they insist that the machine was bought directly from them (online or instore doesn't make a difference).

I'd only buy expensive items direct from Apple in the UK, not a third party reseller simply because Apple do provide great aftercare support. I've had them literally say "we have to repair the computer because of consumer law and because you bought it direct from us"

Sure they will offer longer warranties as needed by consumer law, but the question was within a year and the limited 1 year warranty is universal from Apple internationally from what I understand. So it will not depend on "in what country you are" if they will repair it or not within the first year. ;)

That's the way I meant my question, as in "is there somewhere with shorter than one year?" rather than "it's only one year no matter where you are"
