Making people that bought the most expensive apple watch look and feel foolish.

Can you see these owners making the same mistake again? No
Rich people aren't idiots, resale value of original watch off the scale in the wrong direction.

Again wealthy people dont like very poor investments and to be made to feel stupid.

Too early an update, very unimpressed to be honest.

That's me then. ;)

The iPhone and iPad both only really took off once their second generation models were released so I'm hoping the 2nd gen Watch brings big improvements.
So very true. The original iPhone didn't sell really well and then they dropped the price dramatically as people were saying the iPhone was a flop and no one would want this thing. Not to say the Apple Watch will be the same (it won't) but this is a new product and the first gen Apple Watch could be compared to the first gen iPhone in what people were saying about it... The 2nd gen watch really needs to do something significant to sell more than 10-20mm per year.

It will be interesting to see whether or not Apple reveals a new Apple Watch in March. They've had a fairly successful holiday season last year (probably mostly due to the $100 discount from various retailers) but I doubt they will be able to keep that momentum going until September. Not to mention, I think most people would rather spend their money on the iPhone 7. I would love to have a new Apple Watch so hopefully Apple releases it as soon as possible.

It will also be interesting to see what Apple adds to the 2nd gen models. I'm thinking we'll see something more "evolutionary" than "revolutionary". Better battery life (the ability to go a few days without charging and track sleeping), a slightly slimmer case and maybe a few more sensors for health.

I wouldn't say the sales were very poor, but rather they failed to meet Apple's expectations. Given how much marketshare apple grabbed in a short period of time, shows that sales were decent. It all depends on the measuring rod being used.
I don't think market share means a hill of beans when it comes to the watch because the Apple Watch is dependent on the iPhone. Therefore only iPhone owners are prospective buyers. The fact that they have sold ~700 million iPhones over the years and only around 15 million watches I think says volumes as to the failure to attract their target consumer. Even if there's only 350 million iPhones that are compatible with the watch that's still a tiny percentage that bought into it.

On top of that I've read that a percentage of people have already stopped using the watch and it's just collecting dust. I have no idea where this is going to go but I agree with folks here who say that Apple should market it as a gadget device that complements the iPhone rather than a fashion thing. And yes it needs to have some kind of killer feature that anyone with an iPhone would "need" to have.

How many people are going to drop another $400+ on another iteration of this?

I think everyone that really wanted a Watch, got theirs and won't enter a yearly upgrade cycle like many do (me included) with the iPhone.

What % of current owners are going to upgrade a year later? 10%? How many people that really want a watch already own one? 90%?

I bought a stainless steel one and would be interested in an upgrade. Only 2 things it needs for me to want to upgrade:

1. Must be compatible with existing bands (I currently have more $ in bands than in the Watch!)
2. Must be FAST. Like, really fast. Speed my only issue with the current Watch. I would even take _half_ battery capacity if it meant it was twice as fast.

If you have enough money to afford the Edition... then you don't care about resale value.

Yeah I can't see a tweaked AW in March followed by a second gen three months later. That would be like offering the iPhone 7 three months after the 6s

Yeah that would be like  launching the iPad 4 just a few short months after the iPad 3. Oh wait.

Support running without your phone and I will upgrade every year. My watch is now a yearly upgrade, while phone is every 2 years.

I thought announcement in March and release in April.

Ok then I hope this means onboard SIM, gps, and Core Animation capable S2 and 3rd party voip.

totally disagree everyone seems to think rich people dont care about this sort of thing - a _bad_ investment.

They do, very much care, some care more than us mere mortals (thats why they are rich in the first place they penny pinch all the time!, The owner of 'The Range' in the UK a billionaire ex street market trader he is a very good example).

Warren Buffet is very well known for being fruggle ie his house, car and his favorite restaurant (a cafe) and he would be _incensed_ by his Apple watch edition resale value (if he has one) if apple launch watch '2' so quick.

Paul McCartney used to spend Chistmas in Heswall UK years ago with Linda. I used to live in Heswall. My family still do. He was questioning one Christmas in a shop which kitchen appliance (I think it was a deep fat frier) to buy for someone as a present and it was purely because he wanted the cheaper one!. He's worth $billion for goodness sake but he hadn't forgotten his Council house Liverpool roots and knows the meaning of money (because he knows what its like not to have any!).

Basically pricing in the entire watch market is ludicrous... which is probably why Apple (not to mention other tech companies) was so interested in the space.

One can legitimately argue that Apple is offering more value than most other premium watch brands without contradicting the basic idea that premium watches as a whole are overpriced.

Yeah definitely. The fashion world gets away with some amazing things.

Perfume & aftershave prices are just incredible for what they are. Creams, lotions and potions - anti-ageing, anti-wrinkle etc. just crazy what they can charge, for results that are questionable at best.

Watches are not an "investment". Frugal buyers will steer clear regardless of their financial status. The people with the means and the frivolity to buy an Edidtion... they are not at all thinking "it's ok because it's going to appreciate 5% over the time I wear it"

well yes I think I know that!!!!

What I mean is the Edition watch value will drop like a stone as soon as watch 2 is released.

And someone with the money (to buy an Edition) _will care_ about the distance that stone will drop.

You implied in your previous post people with money simply don't care- not true.

Who is going to touch an Edition apple watch 1 worth £8,000.00 to £13,500.00 as soon as apple watch 2 is released. I would be surprised if resale value is more than £1500 after a year, that would be unexceptable depreciation, and damaging to the apple brand.

He was referring to the original article where it said:
Recent rumors point to the possibility of an interim update for the Apple Watch in March, including only one or two new features (like a FaceTime camera), and with a proper full 2.0 model released later in the year.

Basing reporting on a rumor from an uncredible source? Sounds like MacRumors reporting.

There are rumours Apple will release a revised version of the Apple Watch in March/April (with a FaceTime camera) and then Apple Watch 2 later in the year.
My reading of this is that the Apple Watch 2 will be pushed back to later in the year...I can't imagine two updates in a ear, that'd be crazy!

Although I remember a similar upgrade schedule with the iPad 3!

I agree. Take some time on this. They need to get it right. Every 18 months sounds about right.

No way they will release two hardware updates in a year. That rumor is incorrect. Apple is not that stupid.

I can't argue with that. The speed of the Watch is crippling. I open a program on my Watch (such as ESPN or whatever) and think Hmm.... I could have whipped my phone out and accessed it on there and be done with it by the time it took the Watch for it to load. Half battery I can't argue with as well. For me, I wake up at 6am and retire at 10pm. When I charge my Watch, it has 47-50% battery left. It's enough for a day and a half but not 2 full days. I wish they could stretch the battery out to a full 48 hrs or make it only 24 hrs and up the processor.
