Hey guys I was wondering with the Apple Watch 2, what do you think they will do with existing bands (especially the link bands) and trade in for example. For instance, do you think you will be able to just buy the screen part itself? Just wondered what your ideas were on this

My guess is that the shape will be same, which means that the current bands will work on Gen2. Up to now, you do not see any discounts on Apple bands from Best Buy, Target, etc.. So, the band should be compatible with Gen1 and Gen2.

This is how my replacement watch was boxed. I'd be fine if all future versions could be bought this way.

Most are of the opinion that they won't change the connection and they'll still ship the v2 with bands. If you already have the link bracelet you can just get the cheapest SS model (with Sport band) and transfer it over.

Annoying thing is that I went for the space black, so that isn't really an option

It will be the same like Watch 1. You just choose the band you don't have.

When did they actually release that model, swear that wasn't available at launch

Correct, it wasn't available at launch. They released it at the same time they refreshed the AW collection with the aluminum gold Sport and Hermes models.

Come AW 2, all you have to do is get the cheaper Space Black model and move your link bracelet to it. Either sell the black sport band or keep it as an extra.

Discount the $50+ they charge for a band from the MSRP and I could back that.
What I hope doesn't happen is what we saw with the original iphone; dock included for the first year and it is an additional accessory after that, no real change in MSRP (IIRC).

Yeah, but that isn't likely to happen with the AW because you do not need the dock in order to charge the iPhone whereas the AW is useless without a band. Apple would rather make you pay $49 for its $2 piece of rubber so they'll keep the bands.

I was just thinking that it would suck to have a $350 entry level watch and have to drop another $50 on a band. Shipping with bands never seemed to make sense to me, but I am not a marketing guy. I felt it would make sense to pick whatever I wanted at time of purchse. But I guess shipping with a strap also ensures that straps don't sell out (causing a person who might have bought a watch to not buy one be the strap was unavailable).

Anyway, sell with a strap or don't, just don't give me less for more is all I askj. :)

Any wristwatch would be useless without a band regardless of marketing and the vast majority of manufacturers include a band whether you like it or not so it makes more sense than you think. It'd be like shipping a car without rims.

I suppose.
Apple culd easily employ some sort of double SKU system where you pay one price for the product but have to select the watchface and band in a single purchase.

Shipping a car without rims, I think we can agree, is dfiferent for obvious reasons, not the least of which include making the product much more difficult to move from one place to another.

Regardless, I am just saying what I think would be a nice option. RIght now we are forced to select from a handful of preconfigured options and buy more if we want. Would be nice to be able to make a watchface and band pairing on your own, perhaps even something like a custom "apple watch maker" online order system like I have seen with some smartphones.

One plan I'd go for would be to trade in my AW body for the new version, pay a nominal upgrade fee, and I keep the same band to use on the new one. If I own a sizable stash of bands, this would be great.
