Apple Watch 6 Won't Unlock Mac When Display Is In Always On Mode?

Tried this several times--the watch won't unlock my Mac when display is in Always On mode. In regular display mode, works fine. I thought only the display was being affected, are other things being turned off as well?

It works for me, S6 and before this S5 both with always-on enabled.

I have Always On enabled, but my Watch 6 only unlocks my 2017 iMac (Catalina) about 50% of the time. Sometimes the Mac displays "Unlocking with Apple Watch" and then fails. Sometimes it does nothing but display the password entry field. Rarely had problems with my Watch 2.

I've tried turning this on and off in Security & Privacy a couple of times, but that hasn't helped.

My S6 unlocks my laptop and iMac with AOD on. However my S5 won't unlock either, regardless the dispay settings.
