With the rumored addition of LTE to Apple Watch, wouldn't pairing the watch with AirPods make even more sense than before? It could essentially act as a phone replacement in several instances without much trouble. If there is to be an AirPods 1.2 I wouldn't be surprised if they made a couple control tweaks to better work with the watch.

This route also gets us more comfortable and integrated with wearables. If Apple is interested in VR (again, as rumored) this bridges the gap to customers wearing more technology on their bodies.

Essentially, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Apple is pushing this pairing more heavily in the near future. Does anyone already have these two things paired?

I'm reading LTE may not offer direct phone calls without phone nearby, only internet access like an ipad. Apple is not gonna compete with selling iPhones their bread and butter..

Agreed, they wouldn't do anything to take away from iPhone sales. This would have to be implemented to augment iPhone ownership. Basically what the watch does currently but with greater use ability and features when you're out of Bluetooth/wifi range.

After today's announcement I'm strongly considering this pairing. The AirPods seem to naturally augment the new cellular connection, as the only other way to take calls on the watch is on "speakerphone," basically. I think they go together really well.

No. Pretty certain you can make/receive calls if you are nowhere near your phone. Or if the phone is switched off. That is the whole point.

Sounds like Apple is highlighting the ability to leave your phone behind.

Answer a call from your surfboard. Ask Siri to send a message. Stream your favorite songs on your run. And do it all while leaving your phone behind. Introducing Apple Watch Series 3 with cellular. Now you have the freedom to go with just your watch.
