I used to have a daily alarm set on my phone, but I've started sleep tracking using my watch so instead have an alarm set in the "Sleep" section.

I've noticed that despite the settings on the phone, the alarm is totally silent if I'm wearing the watch and is instead haptic only - without the watch on it's loud from the phone.

My watch is in silent mode because I don't want to get audible email notifications etc if I'm out - but this seems to silence alarms as well (unlike on the phone).

Is there any way to have audible sleep alarms, with the watch in silent mode?

Maybe instead of using silent mode, use DO NOT DISTURB instead. According to Apple:

I'm not sure why it's not consistent between the Apple Watch and iPhone, though. That does seem weird.

He's in sleep mode which is needed to track sleep on the watch. DND and Sleep function the same but I too have the problem of the phone not alerting me and the watch giving weak haptic vibrations to try to wake me up.

He said he's in silent mode, which will disable audible alarms. He needs to turn that off is what I'm saying and use DND instead. The "silent mode" icon is shown below (it's red because it's activated):

Ok, I get ya. Sleep should still silence all notification but will it sound an alarm from my watch? I can just turn off the bell and be good to go?

I don't use Sleep mode, but if it's the same as DND as you say it is, then, yes, that should work.

If you want an audible alarm on the phone speaker when you’re wearing your watch in sleep focus, you can set a separate “other” alarm on the phone outside of the sleep alarm. For mission critical morning alarms, I use one or more of those.

and they can be forwarded to the watch so you can snooze or stop them. If one is concerned about accidentally stopping the “backup” alarm from the watch while half asleep, you can turn off the alarm forwarding feature..

Won’t Do Not Disturb turn off all notifications? I want notifications - just not sound. Unless it’s an alarm.

Well if you're sleeping, why would that matter? Just turn off DND in the morning (or just set a schedule for it so it comes on and off automatically) and then you can see any notifications that came during the night while you were asleep. I must be missing something.
