I don't mind the battery life but I do wish they would find a way to shorten the charge time. It would be nice to top off in about 15-20 minutes, long enough for a quick shower and a full watch battery. If I still need to do it daily due to storage capacity I understand. Batteries can only hold so much with current tech but a faster charge would be nice. As it is, it takes over an hour to charge after 25-30 hours of wear.

I have an AW4 and a Garmin Instinct. The Garmin Connect software is actually pretty good. The weeks of always on battery life is awesome. Activity tracking, getting weather, controlling music on my iPhone, getting messages, GPS hiking, etc. is great. The Apple Watch is awesome but I find myself wearing it less. And I’m an Apple fanboy 100%.

Honesty, it does not make a lot of sense to market as Apple Watch which sounded too generic that people think of it as a dumb watch developed by Apple.

Apple Smartwatch or Apple iWatch is more reflective of what the device can do down the road. A rebranding of the product name will deem necessary for the clarity of its category.

Garmin has O2 sensor now which is a real distinguishing feature. They figured that out before Apple so they deserve the recognition. My brother went with the Garmin plus iPhone for that reason. Personally I don't see the benefit in healthy people but could be huge benefit for COPD patients. Combined with ECG and heart rate this an amazing number of sensors evaluating health on a watch.

apple has been steadily making the Watch less dependent on the iPhone.the only real thing left is updates to the OS. If they can do that directly on the Watch too, then it’s possible that an iPhone won’t be needed to use this. I’ve gotten every model since the second one, and I can see the changes and improvements.

with the cheapest one being well under $200, particularly when on sale, I can imagine that if Apple does make it completely independent, but with a phone app for ease of use, then it could be compatible with Android as well. Since a major sticking point for Android users is price, the least expensive model, which is still as good as any other model for $200, and even more, this would give the watch a much larger potential market. Sales could double, or more.

i hope that Apple is going that way. This watch saved my life not quite three years ago, and I’d like to see that for more people.

Apple has conclusively settled the square vs round debate for smart watches. Round makes zero sense for presenting data. That’s a vestige of a dead generation of watches. Data inherently needs to be presented in a square/rectangular format. Every time I see round smart watches the data on the screen looks horrendous. The public agrees. Look at the sales :)

I’d ask you what kind experience you have with Garmin. Their software struggles, which is their major pitfall. Their hardware is actually very good, but in terms of OS support and stability coupled with unpatched issues, It’s consistently not good. If you have poor OS for a smart watch, then what good is the hardware experience? (Rhetorical)
I haven't had any problems with my Fenix 6S or previous Fenix 5S (or previous Garmin triathlon watches). I've been using Garmin watches for longer than the Apple watch has existed.

The only issue is Apple keeping some (non-security/privacy) APIs just for themselves.

What's your Garmin experience?

I have the first gen Apple Watch that is unfortunately no longer software upgradable. I wish Apple wasn’t so quick to drop support for it. I guess I will break down and upgrade when the Next gen is available.

The problem with the first GEN watch wasn’t necessarily just because ‘Apple discontinued support for it’, the S1 chip was severely under powered from the get-go. The Apple Watch later Gen processors we’re on par with being more efficient in terms of performance with the functionality/third-party apps, software updates, etc. The first GEN Apple Watch was merely an experiment to see really how it would perform and ultimately it struggled with watchOS updates, but we’re starting to see the Apple Watch S-processors become more powerful, But make a difference with the battery efficiency as well.

So like with the butterfly keyboard, Apple has the gall and poor ethics to experiment on its customers who have paid full price for the products. Why not have its thousands of employees use these experimental products to see how they perform before enticing the unsuspecting public to hand over its hard earned cash? You say the first get watch was "merely an experiment". So I guess it was only merely unfair to take cash from the public.

Very shoddy way to run a business.

The apple watch series 0 was experimental in the same way the iphone 1 was experimental. I bought my son the apple watch series 0 as a graduation gift after it came out. He used it for 3.5 years until the battery gave out and then bought himself a current model. Imagine, the iphone 1 not even having cut and paste, how the heck could that have been missed in testing...and the thing was expensive at $599. I guess their thousands of employees didn't use the iphone 1. How the heck could Apple in it's stand-up way take money from the public, and this under SJ?

Point is, it's easy to just post a rant.

ive been sorta wanting the watch forever but always spent my money on somthin else

And it is Square body instead of Circle. I wonder if we will ever see it fixed.

Why do you want a circle body? It will never have as much usable screen area as a square screen?

The limiting factor of a smartwatch is its height because it has to fit on a person's wrist. Given this parameter, a circle will never have as much area as a square when the circle's diameter equals the square's height.

There is a reason why they stopped making round T.V. picture tubes.

My question is when will android manufacturers realize that a circle shaped smartwatch is a bad idea and start making square smartwatches.

The problem is, Neil is unwilling to say HOW bad the numbers are...

There's a certain type of personality that considers it a huge deal that the number of Apple watches shipped was, say, 7.3M not 7.6M. (This is the same as the people who think it's a huge deal that an i9900K gets say 56 on GB4, whereas A13 gets 54, therefore the i9900K is clearly faster.)
Some people cannot ever get past the exact numbers to look at the bigger picture.

But for ME the picture that matters is that for the first few years Apple was shipping about 1M watches a month. In 2019 they were at around 2M a month. That's what's interesting, not arguing about whether it was 2.1M per month vs 1.92M per month.

I really would like to have the functionality of the Apple Watch and the integration with the iPhone.

The square shape is just so Fugly though. I couldn't stand to wear such an ugly thing. Like having a mini iphone strapped to your wrist.

I will stick wait until they bring out a round one. I'm also waiting for them to get rid of the notch before I get my next iPhone.

Its amazing how, with all its money and supposed design know-how, Apple doesn't know what ugly looks like.

Yeah, that always-on display is a real battery sucker. It should still be enough to see you through a day.
Yeah mine just about lasts a day. Off charge at 8am and by 23:00 it’s on about 5% left. This is with no workouts though so if i did a 40 min workout like i used to before this issue we have in the world then it would be dead by 9pm-10pm

so for S6 battery life improvements is enough for me to upgrade

If you need more battery life, there’s always the option of disabling said feature, but I am not expecting any significant improvements to battery life where always-on display is concerned.

Might as well just get a series 4 if you have to do that. I like the AOD so wouldn’t want to be without it.

Even if an extra two hours of battery life is enough for me.
