Apple today shared a funny new ad that focuses on the Double Tap feature available on the Apple Watch. In the spot, a man catches a giant fish and while he attempts to wrangle it, he is able to use Double Tap to trigger the Apple Watch to take a photo on a connected iPhone.

The Apple Watch has a dedicated Camera Remote app, and when opened, it activates the camera on the iPhone. Focusing can be done with a tap on the display, and an image can be captured with either the timer button in the Apple Watch app or the Double Tap gesture.

Double Tap is available on the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. It allows several Apple Watch functions to be activated with one hand by tapping a thumb and index finger together twice. The feature uses sensors in the Apple Watch to detect minute movements and blood flow to recognize the gesture.

Apple will likely use this short ad on its social media networks and YouTube.

I wish when the camera app was open that it just "knew" that something very cool was happening in front of it and took a photo. A man posing with a massive fish should be enough to trigger the AI into figuring out that's what you want a good photo of. Maybe WWDC is when these kind of features will finally be revealed...

Double Tap is probably the most unbaked feature that AW has ever had. It doesn't work half the time and literally stops working the moment you start to walk. It's also nowhere near as fast as shown in Apple's advertisements.

They likely added it at the last minute so people wouldn't mistake the S9 for being a complete copy paste version of the S8.

Double Tap is the GOAT marketing BS feature from Apple ever. I have successfully used it maybe twice but mostly forget it exists. It doesn't do anything I expect it to when I do try using it and too often doesn't register in a support scenario like answering a call.

what if i want to automatically take a photo of something really dull and uninteresting hmm???

My biggest complaint with double tap is that I have to wait for the screen to “wake up” (go from dim to bright) for it to work. By that time I’ve already got my other hand over tapping the screen. And sometimes typing triggers it, another annoyance.

I use it all the time especially for timers and photos. It works pretty flawlessly for me.
The feed from the camera often doesn’t show but double tap works regardless.

This is what I came to say, but I'll add it applies to most of the "features" on Apple Watch. It's like a pet project for Apple, nothing quite works

I tried using double tap for a couple of weeks. It worked maybe 25% of the time. It was too frustrating and I gave up.

Honestly, I just hit the watch with my nose when my hands are full. Sounds weird, but I've been wearing the apple watch so long that I've gotten pretty accurate with it.

Good ad. Would have been nice if this feature was made available in other models too.

It was already an accessibility feature! I use it on my Ultra 1. It actually works flawlessly for resuming workouts, dismissing notifications, etc.

The two things I could really use, answering calls and stopping timers, have never worked on my 9. Spent hours on the phone with upper tier support to no avail.

Wow I’m surprised people here often don’t like double tap or say it isn’t working. I use it a lot in my opinion and I couldn’t do without. Like when riding my bicycle so I don’t have to take both hands off the steering wheel. Or to skip tracks while rowing. When I’m wearing gloves it’s also helpful. Silencing timers feels good too, very lazy :p

Double tap is the reason I finally got an AW and I’m still very happy with the feature.
