Apple today shared a funny new ad that focuses on the Double Tap feature available on the Apple Watch. In the spot, a man catches a giant fish and while he attempts to wrangle it, he is able to use Double Tap to trigger the Apple Watch to take a photo on a connected iPhone.

The Apple Watch has a dedicated Camera Remote app, and when opened, it activates the camera on the iPhone. Focusing can be done with a tap on the display, and an image can be captured with either the timer button in the Apple Watch app or the Double Tap gesture.

Double Tap is available on the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. It allows several Apple Watch functions to be activated with one hand by tapping a thumb and index finger together twice. The feature uses sensors in the Apple Watch to detect minute movements and blood flow to recognize the gesture.

Apple will likely use this short ad on its social media networks and YouTube.

I find this ad in poor taste. Do I really want to see a fish squirming while it is dying of suffocation in an Apple ad? Why not crush some musical instruments instead? Who is producing Apple Ads these days and why have they not been fired?

Not gonna lie, I’ve had my Series 9 for months and have entirely forgotten about this feature until reading this article.

The two things I could really use, answering calls and stopping timers, have never worked on my 9. Spent hours on the phone with upper tier support to no avail.
Is the feature also in your accessibility settings? Try turning it on there and not elsewhere.

I wish when the camera app was open that it just "knew" that something very cool was happening in front of it and took a photo. A man posing with a massive fish should be enough to trigger the AI into figuring out that's what you want a good photo of. Maybe WWDC is when these kind of features will finally be revealed...
The Google Clips camera supposedly did that back in 2018. Killed off, because goooog

It's a shame because it would be a good feature. If the camera sees an alien spaceship or some other interesting thing, or anything it thinks could win a photography award, it should take a photo just in case. There's more than enough processing power to spare on modern iPhones to do it just in case.

Double Tap, 3D Touch, Dynamic Island, Touch Bar, Stage Manager...
Apple will need to add a second floor to the Apple BS Museum.

I seem to have the opposite experience of most people here: Double tap works well for me when I want to activate it, the problem is, it’s not very useful at all.

Furthermore, sometimes it activates by accident, primarily when I’m mindlessly drumming my fingers. This wouldn’t be a big deal except I’m pretty sure a couple times it has cancelled timers prematurely.

Whenever I try

to use double tap it doesn’t work, and generally when I’ve wanted to use it it’s because my hands are wet or dirty, which makes it frustrating.
This isn’t the only half baked watch feature though, the other is the “Looks like you stopped washing your hands message” I get whilst still washing my hands…
