If you had fallen out of the chair I would hope you had an Apple Watch with fall detection. Is that also snowflake generation?

Just because a feature isn't for you doesn't mean others will not benefit from it. As pointed out by another poster I am sure not many people knew how to long to wash their hands to be effective.

Some companies have too much money and some people have too much time.
It took my mom less than a minute to teach me how to wash my hands when I was a toddler. BTW, unless you use a very powerful soap you need at least 20 seconds rubbing your hands to get any normal oil or grease that gets into to your hand even if you don't touch anything. Thus, I don't think we need an Apple engineer to tech anyone how to do that.

If you leave the water running and brush your teeth the watch thinks you are washing your hands. I reported it as a bug in the beta but it’s prompted me to keep the tap off completely whilst brushing.
Boom. Apple helping people save millions of gallons of fresh drinkable water thanks to turning off the tap while brushing teeth. Helps to offset the billions of gallons of water now spent washing hands for 20 seconds. 😅😅

And what about when scrubbing potatoes or other things in the kitchen sink? It seems like all sorts of activities will set this off.

Snowflake generation. I almost fell off my chair watching this at the WWDC. An app to tell you how long you're washing your hands for. I wonder how many well-paid engineers were tasked with solving this problem.

It reminds me that this company has way to much money and resources if they can afford to devote those things to this.

I have yet to see the Washing app popup when I am washing my hands.

Updated: Never mind, I found it.

Press on the Digital Crown
Select Settings
Scroll down to Handwashing

The extra data is helpful in finding out if certain behavior changes helps or degrades your sleep cycles. You can sleep for 8 hours but it may be terrible sleep.

You must be from the ”walk uphill both ways” generation. What a weird flex. A good portion of technology is about making life easier and not necessarily “necessary“. You‘re acting like this started today or with Apple. I’ll get off your lawn now, while I wait for your reply via carrier pigeon.

Remote control to turn on the TV? Seriously, people have been getting up to change the channel for years.

And don't even get started on flipping a switch to turn on a light. People have been using perfectly functional candles for generations.

The vibration alarm on the watch isn’t very effective. Is there a way to turn your iPhone alarm on while the watch is on?

I mean, I guess I can always just turn on my HomePod alarm too.
I've waking to the vibration alarm for years, it is the best way to wake up.

One thing I have found is I never wash my hands for 20 seconds, it is a surprisingly long time lol...And this most likely was someones 10% project.

I wish they had taken a more holistic approach. They have your activity and workout level, combining this with sleep data to determine your state of recovery would be useful. "How should you work out today?"

Well I went back to Pillow cuz the data it provided me was useless like thanks Apple I know when I went to bed and when I got woken up in the morning. I don’t need sleep tracking for that lol
One thing you should know is all hardware that doesn't use brainwaves is made up. There is no real way to know your in REM, deep sleep, etc without brainwaves.

I agree, there is a product that does that now called Whoop.

Can I turn off the hand washing feature?
It's not on by default at lease in the beta.

So far yes...

WatchOS was by far the most disappointing part of the keynote. It’s the OS with the most room to grow, and they did so, so little with it. It seems like they’re more focused on making AW the best nag it can be than on making it the best micro computer it can be. Maybe that’s the direction some people want, but I am sure not one of them.

these two “features” will be day one deactivations for me, if I upgrade at all (and I likely wont, due to them disabling force touch).

There's always something for next year, or the year after.

I'm only on watchOS 4 (because of my S0), but my understanding is the "Smart Move" goal is still pretty basic: it looks at an average or trend over the past week or two, then suggests raising the goal slightly. It doesn't actually look at what kinds of workouts you've been doing (or not doing) to reach those goals. There's a lot it could do with that data, even just basic stuff like "you need to lift x more pounds the next time to reach your new goal".

<Raises hand>. Though I didn’t learn of the WHO handwashing protocol until March, though mine was close enough.

So there was a an health evaluation process years ago in my city, where a health inspector was visiting random restaurants monitoring employees washing their hands for length of time, was soap used, dried properly, ect. The average time a restaurant employee washing their hands was less than eight seconds.

So why am I bringing up a restaurant in terms of washing their hands? If you think about the sensitivity in terms of contact with customers, plates, etc, eight seconds is nearly ineffective if not washed properly. The Apple Watch given almost everyone has one today, at least serves as a reminder if nothing else Where it’s crucial that people be more mindful of how important it is to properly wash your hands.

even though that feature may not be useful for everyone, we all now realize the importance of hygiene on a new level given the pandemic.

Again, Apple thinking ‘outside the box’ where others don’t.

Seems more like this was one area Apple didn’t want to Sherlock 3rd party apps.
To be fair, that’s frequently what they do - the point is to make a simple easy to use app that works for, and satisfies, perhaps 80% of the potential users, and then anyone who needs/wants more, there’s 3rd party apps for that. Compare Apple‘s Reminders to, say, OmniFocus.

Quadruple facepalm?!

If you wanna sleep, turn OFF your fracking devices, jesus. The EMF makes sleeping more difficult. Don't believe me?? Just try it for a night, don't go posting things here before you tried it. Aieplane mode for the phone, unplug WIFI, you'll sleep like a baby.

On a bigger picture this is very sad because it is unfortunately the moment where Apple turns to a business that makes even more money than electronics - health care! Woo hoo! Apple hospital care is coming up. Apple as a business is looking for new revenue streams, cars is one, and unfortunately health is another.

Apple should be working on reducing the EMF exposure from their phones, and from BT headphones, and these headache-inducting magnetic transmitters in the air pods. They could really pioneer mitigating EMF risks here.

But now - instead they invest in the sickness industry - sick people pay more! So let's not reduce EMF but sell everyone pills.

And hand washing - the OCD like obsession with "hygiene" will lead to or is alrady leading to generations with weakimmune systems, which then require more medicines to keep healthy...

It’s very effective. I’d rather wake up to a gentle vibration than a blaring alarm.

Completely agree. I shudder when I see people in bathrooms who basically wet their fingertips and then leave - like they‘re ceremonially dipping them in holy water or something. And, yeah, food prep workers are pretty much one step behind healthcare workers in terms of how scrupulously clean their hands need to be, because they both have the potential to bring harm to many other people, if they're careless about this.

Me, I just developed an enjoyment for the ritual somewhere along the way. The warm water and bubbles. It can be relaxing if you let it, as well as keeping you and others safe.

I look forward to the new feature, if it can trigger fast enough - if it takes a minute for it to figure out that you’re washing your hands, it won’t be practical to use - if it’s fast and accurate, it’ll be helpful, by doing the counting for me.

It certainly didn't inspire current AW owners to upgrade. But let's wait a few months and see what Apple has up their sleeves with AW6. They could be holding back in announcing something like oxygen monitoring, solid state buttons, and removing the crown altogether (not my preference).

I like Pillow also.

I use pillow right now as well but really how accurate are the REM vs Deep vs Light sleep readings? How can pillow figure that out from your watch?

The OS updates aren’t* intended to inspire owners to upgrade. The updates to the hardware that roll out in September are intended to do that. And those will come with unannounced new features in the OS (they rarely tip their hand about unreleased hardware - I think the closest they came was when they urged developers to use new frameworks that were screen resolution independent, and then released new iPhones with different sized screens - some saw the incredibly faint writing on the wall). Oxygen monitoring hardware seems like a good bet. And I’m gonna guess that some of that may tie into slightly more advanced unannounced features in the sleep tracker.

*: apologies, autocorrect “helped” that to say “are”, originally - not what I meant.
