Is it just me or do Apple Watch faces suck? I mean, for starters, there are absolutely no square or rectangular watch faces even though its a rectangular watch, there are no faces with Roman numeral numbers, there are no faces with 24-hour-time inside, none that are pilot's watch style and 0 with a white background and black numbers. Not to mention the terrible gaudy colors you have to choose from when "customizing" it. That's the other thing, they could make a really cool customization program on iPhone so you can select different styles of numbers, drag and drop chronographs, change the style of the hands, etc. But so far they have done nothing to introduce true customization. Perhaps it'd be acceptable if there were a ton of watch faces to choose from, but there honestly aren't. They should be releasing 20 new faces with each software update in my opinion. Or, adding a customization program on the watch app.

UPDATE: watchOS 4 came with 2 new faces and some additional complications to the Disney character faces. I got excited in the days leading up to the release for the Explorer face, and now I learn it’s only available to Series 3 cellular owners. Are you kidding me!?!?! Zero new faces that look like a normal, nice, analog watch except one that’s only available on the newest, most expensive model? Now next time I consider upgrading my AW, I’ll have to remember that there will only be 2-3 unimpressive new faces every year, and some that I can’t even get on mine because it’s a year old. What a huge fail, Apple.

I actually really enjoy the Watch faces. I would like Apple to expand on the faces and perhaps implement a Watch App Store independently or allow third developers to have access for more customization. The latest Watch faces didn't impress with me Numerals and the activity Watch face.

To me, the most powerful feature with the Apple Watch is changing the Watch faces. Hopefully Apple continues to integrate More customizable features, colors and complications.

Why not make your own?

Apple has proprietary watch faces. It has not been permitted for any third-party developers to have access to customize any watch faces beyond what is included on the Apple Watch. You can customize the current watch faces on the Apple Watch, but it's limited.

Yes,was exactly the custom option I meant.

Companies pay apple money to have custom watch faces. Think Nike and Hermès. The pay apple money to have an exclusive look that their customers will pay a premium for. I recall a cost comparison between a Hermès watch and the comparable AW. The cost difference of the two watches - everything the same other than the face - was several hundred dollars. If apple opened up the watch faces, they'll lose the diamond value of them (value only because they're rare)

I agree with the OP. Apple watch faces are not so great. I love the faces on Gear S3 and Huwai watches. Personally I would prefer a round watch. Apple really needs to open up faces to 3rd parties.

I Think eventually they will. But to understand Apple, they like to have control over their entire ecosystem/developer access and the Apple Watch is still a newer product that's evolving/maturing. Over time, I think they will allow this, But not anytime soon.

Yeah as long as they have premium faces like Hermes and Nike+ they never will.

Count me as disappointed with the variety. Here's a canvas that you could do anything with, but what's available is extremely limited. They can't give us a single rectangular dial option for a rectangular device?

My exact frustration. You CAN get a rectangular face.... if you want to spend a ****ton to get a Hermes edition.....

It is hard enough for Jony Ive that people put all kinds of cheap, crappy watch bands on their Apple Watch. It seems inconceivable that he'll allow cheap, crappy watch faces as well.

The existing watch faces are pretty good, but after a while the limited selection gets a little boring. Apple will surely add a few here and there, they already did this once. The Hermes and Nike "exclusives" are a clever way to differentiate; much better than, say, exclusive hardware features. I'm fine with that.

Ideally, there would be no watch faces with dials at all. They all look old and wrong on such a futuristic device. IMHO, of course. That being said, as Apple does cater to the skeuomorphically inclined crowd already, there should indeed be a rectangular watch face (a la Hermes) for everyone. Just a matter of time, I guess.

I prefer (rather strongly, actually) the dial faces. I do not like the digital. I've had many digital watches, and understand the attraction of them, but I really prefer the analog dials. What is frustrating for me is that Apple has only allowed limited customization of the digital faces, nothing with analog. I understand both financially (Hermes/Nike pay) and technically why (you need to have all of the hand positions created and synchronized, for example), but it's still frustrating.

What I like about the existing faces is that they're distinctively Apple's own style (or Nike and Hermes, if you bought them). I don't need my AW to pretend to be something it's not.

If I want a Seiko dive watch face, I've got my Seiko to wear instead (with 200m water resistance and ratcheting bezel, too).

I wish there were more faces, kinda getting bored with them now
But I love the current ones, cringe every time I see a Rolex face on some Wear watch

While I am a bit board with the stock watch face designs, I do wish Apple would freshen up the faces at least a couple times a year. They can keep the old ones and just add to them. Some people may like the legacy faces. I also prefer the dial faces, and even the sweeping second hand. I switch between several faces throughout the month. I like change, but familiar change. I also buy aftermarket watch bands as Apple charges way to much for the bands they have. I understand they need to make money, but I am going to limit the amount they make off of me. I also only buy refurbished computers from them, to save money. I have never had a problem with them. Even bought a refurbished Apple Watch Series 2.

We should see a debut of new Watch faces in a few weeks during the Developer Conference.

If I recall correctly, the last update gave us those activity watch faces. I personally didn't like them.

I hope Apple would release more classic analogue watch faces soon.

I totally agree, no 'formal' or 'classy' watch face like the HERMES watch face which imo is superb. The font of most of the watch face is too non-serious.

What does "Too non-serious" mean? The Hermes Watch face is "Serious"?

Preferably, I would like to see more analog Watch faces. I prefer less clutter and minimal complications on the Watch face for a cleaner interface. Traditional style if you will.

I want a watch face with all 12 numbers but no minute ticks. There's no way to get this. I also would like to get an analog 24 hour display. Nope. And I think it would be cool if you could choose if your second hand "ticks" or sweeps.

A sweeping second hand is the sign of a high-end automatic watch so I'd choose sweeps every time if they add that :p
