Recently bought my son an Apple Watch SE with cellular service and set it up through Family Setup. Everything for the most part works great, except he's not able to control our HomeKit devices through the watch. We have August Locks that I'd like for him to be able to lock and unlock from the watch - but when I try to install HomeKit from the watch it says it requires iPhone - same for the August app.

His Apple ID is added to our Home from the HomeKit app on my phone, but when he tries to use Siri from the watch to unlock the door Siri responds, "Sorry, I can't help with that on this Apple Watch."

Is it not possible to use HomeKit from an Apple Watch set up through Family Setup?

has he accepted the invitation? (if not, it will say pending under his account on your devices)
he might be able to accept on a mac

do you have other homekit devices that work? like a lamp, can he control them?
alarms and locks both have extra requirements for security, you must be authenticated to control them, but once the watch is on your wrist, and unlocked, that should be enough. (not sure if this is the issue, but it might be coming into play)

if it does have to do with authentication, you can get a cheap smart plug, and plug it in somewhere in the house, Don't connect anything to it. You can then setup automations, so that that plug turning on/off will unlock/lock your door. (you probably also want to make the reverse also, so changing the door also changes the plug)
You can then ask any siri device to turn on that plug and the door will unlock.
if the plug was by the door, you could put a nightlight or something in it. and you could tell from a distance what state your door was in.

No, we haven't. I had went through waw74's steps, but it seems to me a watch setup through Family Setup can't use HomeKit. To test I set my son's watch up without Family Setup and it works, but when set up through Family Setup it does not.

Family setup seems very limited on the iwatch I have other apps like Spotify which I have a family account and doesn’t come through, but HomeKit should be part of the family setup

I’m having the same issue. It’s frustrating that I can’t download this to my son’s watch
