Forget what Fashion experts say, the :apple: Watch is fat, chubby and just an ugly square lump.

The only thing great about the design is the ability to customise the straps, but when you look at the actual device itself, it looks hideous. I think Motorola got it right with the 360.

Lol the 360 is awful. It is a complete failure as a smartwatch from a technological standpoint and it's fake round display is absurd.

on the money....All this is just the Apple hype machine at work.
The straps are good quality but I just cannot understand how these fashion designers suddenly find a chubby, squarish watch sexy ? Pretty sure we gentle folk are being brainwashed...."There is no bad design here....These aren't the droids you looking for" (waves hand)

Sigh.

Is it really hard for some of you to comprehend the fact that not everyone thinks the same as you? I, for one, have thought that it looks great since the instant I saw it. My coworkers all think it looks great, so do my friends. People have different opinions.

What a moronic statement. With all due respect to Swiss timepieces, there is more "complexity" in a square millimeter of the "just a chip" in this watch than an entire mechanical Swiss watch. 21st century complexity vs. 19th century complexity...

Chips are easy and cheap to mass produce. You can't mass produce a mechanical watch.

Any random factory worker can put together a battery, chip and touchscreen to make a smart watch but making a mechanical watch requires skill and years of practice.

And I don't know about the S1 chip but the most simple chip is definitely not more complex than an entire mechanical watch

I would pay $500 right now if it were a standalone device with GPS and 3G modem.

I totally hate the idea of it being tethered to the iPhone. How impractical is that?

If this came with a giant flying robot that I could control with the watch, I would be all over this. ;)

I was thinking more along lines of controlling a drone the size of a mosquito. You know, something so small and so boring that the watch itself would be a bigger distraction than the drone.

And of course I was wondering who's making the app to detect that drone and send out the tiny heat-seeking missile... ;)

What do you mean "after all"? That he is an exceptionaldesigner was never in question, except by the ranting goons who just wanted someone to berate over iOS 7. We KNOW he "isn't such a bad designer after all".

Gosh, people think the tides turn on their mighty opinions, don't they

It was sarcasm. I always knew he was a great designer. But if you read any of the comments yesterday, a huge chunk of them were saying things like "Jony can only design nice things when Steve was there to tell him which one of his designs suck and which ones were great."

I don't get this? Hundreds and hundreds of dollars for a watch that gets thrown away this time next year when the A-watch 2 is released. And which is rendered useless if you get a different phone.

What the deuce?

The other thing people need to keep in mind (not singling you out at all), Modern luxury watches range from $2,000 - $7,000 (and beyond) these days. The Apple watch doesn't really play in that market given what we know about pricing. The Gold versions, if priced $1,000 or Above may be pushing it though, just have to wait and see what Apple markets that to.

At these prices the Apple Watch will be competing with the Citizen Eco-Drive and the Seiko Kinetic watch lines. Without the advantage of the battery never running down or needing to be replaced.

I'll still get on. I'll put the charger up on the shelf where my Eco-drives stay in bright light all day.

Sigh.

I think the apple fans are in strong denial here. The vibe i see here is "meh" and "maybe they will get it right in subsequent versions". I feel between this and beats apple has now compromised their brand. The apple store will start to feel like target

The apple watch and the apple edition are both sapphire. The sport is glass

Ion hardened glass, whatever that is.

They are both pretty far from a distinctive fashion statement. Both are pretty generic and bland. Moto is a bit more edgy and distinctive (still falls far short), and Apple has better material and finish (still well in the department store counter category fit and finish).

The best thing about them is that they have additional functionality over the traditional watchface. But none of the revealed smartwatches today really does it elegantly, and none of them approaches the haute couture sense of high-end watches.

I am actually looking for a swiss maker, or even someone like Fossil, to really shake up the market by making some functionally simple (relatively speaking), and yet elegant in form, along with some variety to design. Someone that has deep expertise, and has been doing it for decades if not centuries, would probably the most likely place a truly defining smartwatch is made.

There were plenty of people who liked to wear digital watches before the rise of cell phones.

I have several quartz drive watches, but they are all analog, not digital. The digital watch craze died out pretty quickly, I don't see anything but analog these days. Maybe it's just the people I hang out with, but I don't see them much in the stores anymore either.

I'm confused, are you implying that I'm in denial, or that other people on here are in denial?

Any way, my point was just that when it comes down to aesthetics and fashion, it's all personal opinion and everyone's got one. People need to stop assuming that it's just ~impossible~ for people to think the watch looks good.

I want to see a 24-hour analog face. I have such a mechanical watch and love it.

I wonder if they get converted to regular emoji if the recipient doesn't have an iOS device.

Right, I would like to see a traditional watch maker implement a design similar to this:
shopping

With the analog minute & hr hands intact to indicate time, but still have an OLED display underneath to show additional information. That, along with novel ways of interaction (not touch screen) would make it a very interesting design and UX.

I like the look of it and like all the customization options. What will prevent me from buying the first gen is how heavily it relies on iphone. If it had standalone GPS (so it could replace my garmin watch) and/or cellular then I'd probably be interested. As it is, I don't see the big draw since I'd have to have my iphone on me for almost all purposes. But the flaw is not in the design, from my perspective.
