I was hoping to upgrade my watch SE to Ultra or one of the series 8 but hearing apps stopping support like messenger which I use. It’s handy for being at work when I can’t reach my phone. If the watch becomes a health only gadget I may quit using it to be honest. I mainly use it for Ring, Messenger, texting and browsing online. If there’s a big roll back and it becomes the usual £20 android watch may be fine for a change?

My uses are pretty much the same as yours - although what makes you think support will stop for these apps/features in the first instance?

EDIT: Just read this article : https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...discontinued-by-end-of-may-says-meta.2389277/

Im in the same boat - I will be hanging on to my current watch without upgrading in the near future to see how usage pans out. I do not use it for health tracking etc so all of that has no interest to me.

Yes I mean I expected a larger screen maybe Safari maybe a working camera but seems they want to pitch it for health use. I’m also surprised it can’t play music via some sort of speaker.

These are unlikely expectations, browsing, listening to music, taking photos, do you want twice the Ultra thickness and half the battery life? At best you could have a very bad browsing experience with that tiny screen, a terrible speaker (it has one already - there is a good reason you can't use it for music playback, it would distort and sound horrible at any reasonable volume) and where the camera hardware should go I don't see either.

The AW currently has well established features and does much more than just the Health app, it connects for music via Bluetooth, has wireless payments, and so on, and a couple more features like maps navigation with third party apps.

The AW including the eSIM version is meant to be used with an iPhone where you can play music, use Safari and take photos as much as you want. It won't be this standalone gadget that does it all and doesn't need to.

I have a phone for messaging and calling people.
My AW, iPhone and MacBook act as a single entity for me each having a range of purposes and capabilities, with a degree of overlap, which I select according to the task at hand and convenience of use.
I’ve banged in nails with the handle of a screw driver!

I use Apple Watch for health(huge for me), Apple Pay when Face ID doesn’t work. This is huge security benefit, coz I don’t enter my passcode of phone in public. AW to unlock computer if needed. Play music if I am not near the phone or don’t carry the phone on trail. i use iMessages, and would never touch Facebook with 100 foot Pole.

Seriously, Apple arguably has the best messaging platform out there. Why anyone would use FB Messenger is beyond me. Meta can keep that spam infested trash to Google devices.

The native apps work great on the watch. Especially impressed with the Home app which has been amazing since they redesigned it a few OS’s back. HomeKit is something I’m heavily invested in.

There are those of us who don't use FB or WhatsApp. I use my watch for health and exercise tracking and I leave my phone on silent 100% of the time and rely on my watch for a very limited set of important notifications. I also rely on my watch for my alarm, and have since the Apple Watch 3.

I went Cellular with my previous Apple Watch and have found it indispensable for calling 911 while out jogging (without my phone) - I've had to utilize this several times - not to mention the most important reason, my wife being able to contact me while I'm out and about if needed (ex. hitting something on freeway that popped 3/4 tires last year).

Not to mention using my watch to log into my Mac and enter my admin password on my Mac...

Yeah... loss of FB messenger doesn't bother me at all.

I did see several very popular threads on Reddit with people unhappy about this so I know while it may not affect me it is going to hit other people hard. :/
