Apple Watch Gets Another Competitor in the Android-Based LG Watch Urbane

My point is that all watches, including old school mechanical watches, are mobile devices.

I simply found it funny that ZDnet referred to the Pebble as a "mobile watch".

But where your argument really falls short is the iPhone retail price vs other devices.
Per the Sprint page, here are *retail* prices (not contract prices):
- Galaxy Note Edge - $840
- iPhone 6+ - $749
- Galaxy Note 4 - $720
- Galaxy S5 - $649
- iPhone 6 - $649
- Nexus 6 - $648

I'm sure we can get to the point where we're finding cheap Android devices with quad core CPUs running in the low 1.x range, but those are some ******, laggy phones. Perhaps people don't care about that, but I do.

This while informative and a little denigrating has little to do with the price of Macs. High end Android phones have always been close to the price of iPhones

Ah! *grin* Okay, I see now. I was thinking "mainframe" meant large, not immobile.

In this case, the article came from a "mobile" tech reporter, meaning connected devices, so that's why he labeled it as a "mobile" watch.
 
Great looking watch. Google really needs to start improving its products like android wear. Used it in a store and the hundreds of reviews are right...It's pretty bad.

It's not good. I can't find one review that says android wear is good. Using it in the store confirmed it. Google will obviously improve it but right now the software kills the experience.

Not thought about this before, but you're right. Of all the different watches out there of different shapes, sizes, colours etc., of you're on iOS, they're all pointless.

But that can't be a nice feeling. If you have an iPhone, the only watch you can buy is Apple's don't like it? Tough luck.

Oh right, I hadn't heard that. Of course, no-one really knows what the apple watch is like as the only reviews so far have been from reviewers who probably don't want to upset apple.

Yeah I personally think the apple watch ui looks tedious based on the videos but we'll see what happens when consumers get their hands on it and more sites review it.

I don't think anyone cares about not upsetting apple though. Why would they?

I havent heard such drivel here in a while. Apple was not first into the smart watch game. They may or may not have the best watch, time will tell.

Have you used an apple watch? How do you know it works better? What if it has all the bugs of iOS 8?

All this talk is speculation? The Apple watch will either be a success or a dud. Time will tell

Never used an apple watch. Never said it will work better. Never said anything about the apple watch in the thing you quoted.

Could it also be that Android wear was NOT in fact a kneejerk reaction to the Apple Watch,

but a knee jerk reaction to the insane growth of wearables, smartbands, fitness watches and the absolutely insane interest that Pebble managed to attract via kickstarter.

Don't get me wrong, I think Android wear is absolutely a "me too" technology and it will get better as it ages.

But I think most people here on MR are mis-attributing where the 'smart watch' and wearables drive recently started.

kdarling had a fantastic post earlier (will try and find it) where google online trends for search clearly show the "smartwatch" uptick starting around the time of the Pebble announcements. it spiked post Apple Watch but was already trending upwards. The Apple watch was very much a "Me Too" product. The difference is, Apple at least took their time to try and "perfect" what they were releasing (though since they're not actually in consumer hands yet, I can't judge if that's acheived yet or not)

All true except it was trending downwards after the initial upward trend until apples announcement where it skyrocketed. As my post after kdarlings post showed.

Either way, the interest in smartwatches didn't start with apple

its amazing that this concept still holds true so many years after it was developed and written.

The smartwatch industry is following the trend of another product to fit neatly into this. I'd say that Pebble and other band makers were absolutely the innovators and and early early adopters, But Apple's vast size, marketting muscle, and install/fan base absolutely helped bridge the chasm and kicked us into the "slope of enlightment" stage where early majority can start considering and looking at smartwatches.

It's absolutely what happened. I've said it countless times, Apple rarely does it first, they rarely do it worse. That being said they also make excellent products and that's what gives them vast size, marketing muscle and brand loyalty. That stuff doesn't just magically happen.

Giving credit to pebble is absolutely warranted. Saying pebble is the reason everyone is talking about smartwatches today is absolutely silly. I like being realistic, makes me happy.

Yes, I would grant you that TODAY - most are talking about the Apple Watch. But I wouldn't extend that beyond the past few months. There is truth that the Pebble Watch is was made wearables a topic worth talking about. Prior to the Pebble, not so much.
