I have medical problems, I do need to keep track of my heart rate.
The :apple:Watch is NOT a medical device. It is not FDA approved to perform any medical related screening or monitoring. At best it could be a personal supplement to any medical devices you require.

I have medical problems, I do need to keep track of my heart rate.

Get a FDA approved medical device for medical use.
AW is not design as medical tool, yet.
This is design for health improvement, and accuracy & non-allergy is not necessary required for health improvement, but it is as medical tool.

I guess I'll be only the third person to recommend washing the watch.

I rinse mine off every time I shower — yes, the whole watch — and dry it with my towel. I would have never bought the AW if it wasn't water resistant.

If splashing water on the IPX7-rated AW makes you nervous, just pop the band off and wash it instead.

What did you do before the the Apple Watch?

perhaps OP didn't have health problems then?

however, as others have said @cutemoto , it isn't FDA approved and therefore not really suitable for your use case - at least not to be relied on. out of interest, what are you using to "keep track of your heart rate" on the watch given that it will only taken intermittent readings (every 10 minutes or so at rest) without user interaction?

Yeah, it's probably just the bacteria from your sweat getting stuck in between the watch back and your wrist. If I don't rinse and towel the back of my watch off after working out, it will "itch" a bit later in the day. So yeah. Easy fix.
