Hello all!
I have created this thread to showcase your ideas, mockups and concepts for custom Apple Watch faces. I know, that this kind of customization is not possible now, but I´m very motivated to create some in my free time.

I think you got the right direction. Loving these kind of sci-fi watch faces.

That's awesome looking. Need more mockups in this thread.

EDIT: Saw second mockup. Amazing.

Love them both.

Animation is always a bonus :)

Shame the stars in the second one are smoothly moving right to the very edge of the front of the watch, which looks great, but won't be possible due to the size of the bezel around the actual display area.

Keep them coming... Love it :)

My thoughts exactly. Goes to show how nice it would look if it was edge to edge screen.

Just for fun and to give some ideas to keep the thread going:

Here are the 18 faces that Apple gave the iPod nano in a 2011 update:

And of course there are a couple of watchface maker apps for Android Wear.

Many of those user created faces are collected here: http://facerepo.com/

(Be sure to check both "Facer" and "Watchmaker" formats at the upper left.)

Any guesses if Apple will allow watchface maker apps?

We may see a generator for custom watch faces to Apple Watch. While I'm not sure about if ones like these would be possible I can see a basic watch face generator. Samsung has released one from the start of the Galaxy Gear family of watch I'm sure Apple will do the same.

I think custom watch faces are inevitable, but it'll be a while before we see them, and they'll be heavily curated when they do arrive. Too many potential lawsuits otherwise.

If a 3rd party developer releases a copyrighted face .. it would be no different than today. A take down notice and Apple shuts off the app. The copyright owner might sue the developer, but ya not Apple.

Thats it ... Apple got it trouble because THEY used the railway clock in their app without getting permission.

My guess is either with iOS 9 or iOS 10. I doubt the watch firmware would be on a different schedule.

regarding copyrights

Faces from various brands, sports teams, movies, music acts, etc... Can be licensed and released legally. They'll be plenty of that...

I'm curious if we can add "wallpaper", which would be under the various elements, or as they call it, "complications" (a traditional term from the watch industry).

So, you'd have your own wallpaper, which is not an app, just like you do for your iOS devices and Mac, with no concern about copyrights. And over that you'd have the time, notifications, etc.

We do this now with the other devices, so I see no reason for that to be a problem. Will Apple allow wallpaper at all? Who knows.

I suspect they will, if not in Watch OS version 1.0, than a later version.

So the SF Giants may have an official Watch face, or you can just customize your own. We know faces are customizable - that's official, we just don't know how customizable.

Fantastic question & idea!!!
This would skirt the issue of Apple needing to police intellectual property... it would place that responsibility solely where it belongs, on the user.

Example:
Coca Cola doesn't care if I draw their logo on my shirt & wear it every day of my life... but were I to try to SELL that shirt, they might get litigious. People can make whatever sport team faces, etc. they want, as long as nobody is trying to directly profit off it, I do not believe they are going afoul of the law.

Disclaimer: definitely NOT a lawyer, lol. This is merely my basic understanding of copyright law.

One flux capacitor!

Why is AW custom faces inevitable, when iPhone has never offer custom homepage, other than wallpaper?
Apple gave us custom Photo wallpaper AW face, which is consistent with iPhone wallpaper only custom on homepage. Until iPhone custom homepage is available, don't expect AW custom face.
Apple is very very consistent on what they give to customer, good or bad.
