In my opinion the work phase is too short and watch HR sensor can't keep up with peak load. Mostly it greys out during HR spikes.
Obviously the duration of peak load is quiet short. Let's say your load phase is about 45-60s. My watch struggles regularly to show the accurate HR. Only in the rest phase it gathers data.
What is your impression? Any tips?

What band are you using? Where do you wear the watch?

has nothing to do with software imho
Just the Sport band.. and everywhere. Why not give it a shot? Could be a glitch. I use the weightlifting in the workouts app and it records my data just fine, HR and all. if it’s graying out then at least try a restore and see if that fixes it. If not, then contact Apple Support.

It's an issue with all wrist based HR trackers when doing weights, same thing happens with Garmin and Fitbit as I've had both.
Because of the sudden peak in HR when you pump it hard for 45s.
I think wrist watches are better suited for cardio (constant load)

I wear a chest strap heart rate monitor and my Apple Watch when I run, and it's not uncommon to get very inaccurate readings on the watch compared to the chest strap. Wrist based HR monitors (light based) just aren't as accurate as chest strap monitors (electric based). Though I have found the Apple Watch to be the most accurate of any wrist based monitor.

I completely agree with your assessment!

Now I have a good experience since 8 minutes in this position

Edit: only helps slightly. Catches HR quicker once it was greyed out it seems

I’ve found with the braided solo loop band I have to push the watch pretty far up my arm or else I won’t get a reading when running. The silicone solo loop and the sports band don’t seem to be as touchy in this regard. Might be worth a try.

I think you are right. I also have to put it far up on the arm. Then the HR scan seems to be more reliable

Yeah no problem here either. I work out with weights 4x a week & bike 30 miles a day and my Apple Watch 6 has no problem monitoring either physical activity. Love this thing!

The Nike band all the way. It is the most breathable with all the holes. The only band I would exercise with. There are cheaper versions of the nike band you can buy from amazon if you don’t want to spend $50. Mine came with the watch. I did order a fabric loop band from Amazon tho, but i think i will use that for sleeping or just walking around with.

I had the problem with the regular sports band, that it smelled cheesy after a while. I mean, I have a "normal" hygiene. But I think some bacteria is built up there and reacts with the material.
