Any word on whether the Series 6 Cellular will be 5G? I guess it would be kind of pointless since you aren't going to be streaming 4K video over cellular on your Apple Watch, but just wondering if Apple might throw the 5G chip in there since the iPhones are all going 5G too.
Probably not yet. The current Qualcomm 5G modems use more power than LTE. If Apple can developer their own 5G modem and integrate it with the SOC, then you will likely see 5G on the watch.

In the meantime, what would be the benefit of 5G on a watch?

I suppose Apple could reduce functionality and extend battery life, but I don’t expect them to. Their vision of what a smart watch should be is what they’re selling, and people sure seem to be buying.

A 2-day-at-most smartwatch is not a vision. It's a limitation.

That’s one more G!

Engineering is all about limitations. You want a longer battery life, what are you willing to trade for that? You willing to have a watch that is 2-3 times as thick and take much longer to charge? Would you rather have a watch that does little more than be a fitness tracker and music player? Willing to give up the amazing display? EKG? Speed? Always on heart rate?

Unless you have something magic that you should be selling to them, something has to give to get that battery life.

Over the course of time, I have worn several of the Garmin watches, and while I understand people’s interest in them, they are Apple Watch competitors. They are fitness trackers.

Overall I am happy with the choices Apple has made with the Apple Watch, and it seems many others are as well.
