When running outdoor, my watch does everything. Music, navigation, phone, track my workout with STRYD footpod and payment. Only thing missing is camera.

With Apple Watch I still take my phone with me but now I use it mostly as a "pocket computer". I take it out only when I really need to do some "computer stuff" like serious typing or watching multimedia. And for exercise or going to grocery's, I don't need to take a "computer" with me (but sometimes I miss the camera).

I’m curious what happens if your phone is off. Does the AW (cellular) still function the same way?

Pretty similar. I think that text messages (not iMessages, so only the green ones) will not forward if the phone is off IIRC. There might be something else I’m missing but it’s pretty minor if so. Aside from that, it works the same

groove-agent you had several questions I’ll try to answer.
1. Does AW cellular work if phone is off? If you have a cellular/gps watch you do not need your phone with you. Once you get out of Bluetooth range the phone will connect to cellular and your good.
2. Does the battery last the entire day? Battery usage is very subjective and different for everyone. Too many factors to give an accurate answer. I’ve had mine last all day (0500-2100) and there are times I only got 8 hours. It all depends on what you are doing with the watch. I believe the watch has a strong battery. Of course we always want more.
3. Apple maps. Yes you can use maps without the phone if you have a cellular/gps watch. I believe if the watch is cellular it is always gps as well.
As far as totally replacing my phone. I don’t see it at this time. I do leave my phone at home or in the car as much as possible but cannot go completely without it. That day may not be too far off but the watch has to adopt much more functionality before it can replace the phone. Someone mentioned a camera. I agree 100% that a camera would be amazing addition to the watch. Time will tell.

I use just my Watch and leave my phone at home all the time.

Mostly on purpose. Getting a cellular Watch finally solved the problem of forgetting my phone.

That's awesome. Does the battery last the entire day when you use it this way?

Yes, you know, mine seems to last from 8 am until 10-11 pm with "standard" usage. I read the posts about bad battery life with interest because that simply is not my experience. Granted, I am not doing an iron man triathlon before breakfast and a 5K mid-afternoon either. PS: AW5, 44mm

A lot of the bad battery talk is from people who had a series 3 watch and got used to being able to go 2 -3 days before needing to charge.

In non exercise mode, the series 5 does an excellent job. If I didn’t have a RSS feed going with notification alerts, and other active monitoring, I could probably get 1.5 days between charges. As it is, I am an easy 14 -16 hrs before putting on the charger and swapping with my series 3 for sleep tracking.

I know this wasn't directed at me specifically, but since there are new watch users reading this, I want to make clear that my comments about the watch not lasting a full day are based on using it in cellular mode with no phone nearby. As long as I am near my phone most of the time, I have no problem going a full day, even with an hour or two of exercise away from the phone.

I mentioned that in the original post, but just want to clarify it again here. Under 'normal' circumstances, my watch easily lasts a full day.

One of the biggest problems I have, is that there are times when I need access to some of my passwords. 1Password doesn’t afford the watch user the opportunity view passwords from the vault on the watch. And Apple Notes is not available.

ummmm I have zero problems viewing passwords on my watch. I use them every day at work. I can't be pulling my phone out, so I use my watch to view my passwords for logging into different websites. in 1password, you need to edit the "Add to Apple Watch" field. then on the watch, just tap the log-in and the username and password appear on the watch screen.

Thanks. The last time I tried it was when I first got my series 3 when it first came out, and I don’t believe 1Password supported that. If they did, I don’t recall seeing. I may be wrong.
