(Kind of) got plagued by this issue too. Sometimes if I wear my watch for so long besides working out with it, I get this weird mark on the back of my Apple Watch on the upper right corner. Unlike the OP I can wipe it off with screen cleaner but it’s some hard looking residue that does come back like once every few days.

Happens if I sweat or not. It’s been like a week since I seen it

so it's on the back of the watch, you can clean it off, it doesn't impact functionality, so?
The back of my S7 doesn't look "clean" compared to the replacement S7 ...
The back of my U2 doesn't look "clean" either and once a month or so I wipe the sensor area off with an alcohol wipe ...
it seems normal/typical wear and tear

Of course, I initially thought it was a mystery because it always appears in the same spot after I remove the watch to charge it after I track my sleep. However, I’m not in the OP’s situation, and the watch is still clean, unlike the other case from OP where it was underneath the sapphire crystal. I briefly consulted AppleCare about it, and they informed me that since the watch can be removed and wiped clean with enough screen cleaner, it’s not damaged.

I wanted to add a side note comparing this situation to typical use versus a defect. Despite this, I’m able to keep my watch clean.
