Is it worth picking up the AW for $150 or wait for the new ones to come out this year for a price drop on Series 3? Will Series 1 work fine for the next couple years? I would buy it now vs waiting to Black Friday.

Presumably it's just a few months until the next Apple Watch is released, at which point the Series 1 will be several generations behind. If it were me, I'd wait and put that $150 towards the next series.

Even right now, the Series 3 is so much better than the Series 1 that I wouldn't recommend buying the Series 1 unless your budget is restricted to $150.

This question is asked quite frequently. I would base your decision on two things, what do you want from the Apple Watch and would you be content with an older model given a refresh is highly likely?

I also would take into consideration the Series 1 will be fairly dated in terms of technology, but it still serves its purpose depending how you plan on using it. Also, I think 50 M water resistant is an important consideration that the Series 1 does *Not* have.

My budget is more or less $200. I was looking at the FitBit Versa, but not too keen on it.

I think I might just go all in on Apple since Google supports their products less and less. Plus, I have the integration with my MBP.

What I would like an Apple Watch? Notifications, fitness tracking, sleek design, at least two more major Watch OS updates, app support, integration with my iPhone, good battery life, music.

I do not mind using an older model if the pricing is decent and the difference isn't stark enough. I don't do aquatic sports much, so a 50 M water resistance isn't imperative like splash resistance.

Best Buy and Macy’s have the Series 3 (GPS) aluminum for $50 off for Father’s Day. Macy’s includes the Nike version too.

Series 1 for $150 is a steal, I’d say grab that.

My wrist is too big for the 38mm, so I had to go 42mm for $180. Though I did get a rebate on it, about $33 off. So it brings it down to a little under $160 after tax. Looks like I am committed to iOS from here on out.

Then I think the Series 1/Series 2 would be more than enough for your needs. And you should be able to least obtain a minimum of one more year of watchOS support past watchOS 5.

ESpecially given that you stated your budget is approximately $200, it’s also very possible the next generation of Apple Watch could be priced remotely higher over your allotted spending.

The only reason I mentioned 50 m water resistance being important, is not so much for swimming, which is an extra protection over a splash resistance rating. Many times obviously our hands are near water and there are those scenarios where we least expect it where the Watch might get wet, I think the additional water resistance is really something nice to have that the Series 2 offers over the Series one.

Right now, it would be wiser to just wait it out.

If water proofing isn't critical, what about GPS? If you exrcise and always bring your phone with you anyway, then this doesn't matter. Same with altitude measurements; series 3 has barometric sensor, replicated in iphone 6 and onwards.

And who can say how long Apple will support series 1 (and 2, since they're electronically virtually identical), if you put away like $10-20 a month in a jar, by the time Apple releases a series 4, and with the money you already have you will likely be able to afford an aluminium model, maybe even with LTE support... :)

Given that the S1 is a current product I’d expect it to be fully supported for a couple more years and given Fitbit’s inability to make products that last any time at all, I’d say you’ve made a much better choice than going with the Versa.

Always carry my phone with me. GPS isn't needed. No need for a barometric sensor. I think Watch OS 6 comes to the Series 1 since it's the budget model and similar specs as the Series 2 more or less. Doubt Apple will cut support for two watches like that.

I wouldn’t say that. They both share the same processor. Either way, there is no guarantee what WatchOS 6 will offer, you’re limited as it is due to budget and you’re needs Are minimal.

Nice! Don't forget to set up the activity app on your phone and start filling in those rings. It's gotten me exercising every day for the last three months.

That would be a good start to getting active on my end haha.

Moving from S0 (sold on Swappa) to S1 cost me $55 total using this deal. It basically amounts to doing a RAM upgrade in an older computer...for that kind of money I deemed it “worth it” and can easily sell the S1 later this year if something enticing comes out in Sept.
