The 42mm space grey aluminum with sport band watch is on sale for $220. I don't need GPS and I'm not too concerned about needing a waterproof watch. I'm just worried about the future OS update not being supported on the series 1 by next year.

I just posed the same kind of question in the marketplace about a brand new series 1 42mm SS I just bought. lol Will be interesting to see what people say.

Edited to add: I am guessing that the series 1 may support one more release. Who knows for sure..

Apple is still selling the series one aluminum for $249.00. It really comes down to what kind of use you have planned for the watch on a day to day basis.

This is a great question. It's tough to make an accurate measurement because the Apple Watch is still fairly new in its infancy with watchOS updates and how Apple is time -lining them.

If I had to make an accurate prediction to the best of my ability, I do believe the Series 1/Series 2 will see one more watchOS update with watchOS 5, and I don't Believe the first generation Apple Watch will see support for watchOS 5.

But what I would do in your situation if you are able, is I would likely spend the extra money if you can and consider a Series 3 aluminum sport model GPS only.

Apple hasn’t yet dropped support for original watches yet so there’s no real precedent.

I’d expect it to be based on the performance of the watch rather than arbitrarily based on age of the device.

On that basis the series 1 is significantly faster than series 0 and so I think it’ll be supported for a while yet.

In terms of purchasing, I’d recommend series 1 if series 3 is a bit too much of a price jump. I’m actually looking for a used one to replace my wife’s series 0. She doesn’t want to spend series 3 kind of money.

Well the Series 1 is splash proof, it’ll happily survive the rain and I believe some have had it in the shower? Just don’t go swimming with it!

As for support, I wouldn’t worry, it came out what last year! And you lot think Apple will kill it off next year?? No. It has the same dual core CPU as the Series 2 in it, it will be supported for a while yet no problem.
The Series 0 on the other hand won’t be supported for as long, Apple supports the iPhone for 5 years is it? Can’t see why the Apple Watch would be any different.

You have to pay to play. If your wife wants all the bells and whistles then she needs to get the s3 watch, LTE if possible. Otherwise, she’ll just have to deal with the watch she has now.

I just got the LTE version and I think the price was a bit high but like I said, you have to pay to play.” I had the gps version s3 but I wanted the LTE version so I ended up selling the s3 gps watch on ebay and used the proceeds to buy a new S3 LTE watch with AppleCare.

I’ve had the 0, 1 and 3 but my wife’s usage is far less and she doesn’t need GPS or LTE. The extra cpu offered by the series 1 would be enough :)

If all she uses it for are notifications and onboard apps , sounds like a smart way to go.

You are correct, it is splash resistant at IPX7. And it should be able to survive in the rain and obviously Apple recommends you can rinse it under water to clean it and then thoroughly dry it with a towel. But it is not rated For submersion.

I agree Series 1/2 should see at least another year of watchOS support through watchOS 5. The S2 processor is still fairly nimble. But I question the fate of the first generation Apple Watch being supported to watchOS 5. So I think at WWDC will be interesting to see what is supported or not.

I think series 1/2 will get 2 more updates. Series 0 got 3 updates. Series 1/2 have only had 1 so far.

Technically the first Gen had four WatchOS updates. But The Apple Watch is still a A highly evolving product, it's too early to tell specifically where watchOS is leading. So given the speculation and how uncanny Apple can be, it's difficult to make any assessment at this point.

I mean series 0 started on the first watch OS and has been updated 3 times.

However yes it’s true it’s difficult to establish an update pathway just yet for the Apple Watch.

I use mine in the shower all the time. I've also had it in the pool and in the ocean for limited amounts of time with no issue.

When the first generation Apple Watch launched, it was reported/rumored that Tim Cook told another Apple play that he showered with his Apple Watch. At least, I would be really think it be suitable to use in the shower, as many other forum members have without issue, but it's not a guarantee obviously.

Yes I remember hearing that Tim Cook said that and the series 0 was only rated as splash proof.

I needed one for sleep analysis (I wear my watch all the time so pauses for battery recharges wasn't an option), but even at Targé's special $220 deal it was still more than I could stomach. Then the wife reminded me we had a stack of Target gift cards from years past - et voilà - them and $40 got me a series 1 - MUCH more affordable. :D

Upshot is, I'd not pay $220 for a Series 1 - if I personally wanted another Series 1 I'd go used. They're much too expensive to pay a higher premium as they are. Really still don't get Apple's rational to drop the Series 2....
