Yeah, that’s why I’ve always asked Apple to release an Apple smartband, a wrist band with just the essentials: time, weather, activity and sports tracking, heartbeat and blood oxygen monitoring, alarm and iPhone notifications. No need for external apps or App Store, browsers or video. Maybe not even phone calls if that drains the battery too much. Just the essentials in a smaller (maybe pill-shaped) and lighter device with ten times the battery life.

But apparently there’s no market for that…
Agreed! This with 5 days battery life would be an instant buy. I have a phone for everything else. I just want the accurate sensors from Apple tracking sleep steps activity.

Not sure how this is possible with the same S10 chip found in Series 10. A teardown might reveal more information.
Yep, looking forward to this. However, it has convinced me to hold off another year for the S12 in hopes for a die shrink and 26+ hours of battery life.

The article oddly neglects that while the watch goes from 18 to 24 standard battery life , power saver mode only goes from 36 to 38. That would mean the vast majority of the savings appear to be them just in software limiting the standard mode to be more like power saver mode.

Bro come on man, I’m sleeping the 6 other hours… I still need to charge once a day or during night… When we will get 2 or 3 days battery?
I've never understood the battery life issues, unless realistically you're like an ultra marathon runner or something - in which case a physically larger battery actually gives you more runtime (peace of mind) to track the workout. I had a Series 0 (OG), took a break, got a S5, S6, and Ultra 2 and it's always been fine for me. I would always got about a day and a half of use. (incl. wearing overnight just for simple HR tracking, even before they added Sleep Focus) and end up topping it up around noon the next day.

You can top up the battery in many downtime moments during the day, when you shower etc.; and it's more than enough. It was good even back in S6 times, and these days with the fast charging of the S9 onwards (or S10?) you're pretty much at full charge instantly. You can also squeeze extra juice out if you turn off the AOD - I don't always find it useful.

Not to mention It's actually good to take the watch off your wrist every now and again to let the skin breathe, not get imprints on it; and it might actually get you to clean the underside of the watch in the sensor puck edges from built up dead skin.

In the last 2 years or so even I'm actually trying to teach myself to switch wrists since especially when it's a bit sunny I get a tan line. I used to exclusively wear it on the left wrist and I noticed little bumps where the hair follicles stick out of the skin as well. So I alternate to make sure if I get a tan it's more even, and to allow my skin to breathe. I don't see it as a problem, battery life has been plentiful. Yes, maybe I'm definitely one of the more average/passive watch users/weareres (w/ maybe a workout max per day, and not much interacting) but still... it does the job.

It seems like their mantra has always been about adding features/improvements at no hit to battery life (via efficiencies) - keeping it the same 18h advertised, and now even more (24h). My 2¢ 🤔😊

I jump rope for an hour at a time and my Apple Watch doesn’t even notice that I’m exercising.
This is ludicrous.
So while the Apple Watch may “do more things”, do they actually work?
It can absolutely track jump rope workouts, however it's not one of the workout types that it detects automatically.
There's a few they've "trained" it to pick up on (can't find the list right now), but it's a smaller section of the entire list there: Indoor/Outdoor Walks or Runs, Indoor/Outdoor Cycling (including better detection on e-bikes last yr), Swimming, and maybe one/two other things too?

Not sure in this specific situation, it might still detect something and offer the prompt, although it might not be sure of what type of activity you're doing; but for eg. one thing I've noticed is this fails if you wear your band too loosely on the wrist, as the accelerometer can't quite work out the type of movement being done. If it's too loose the watch flaps around independent of the actual movement of your wrist, so it confuses it. The automatic detection also fails for me at times when I wear older bands, I'm pretty sure they might have a little magnet or something in the pin mechanism that interferes with the watch; happened too many times at this point. :)

I have found it to be wildly inaccurate. This thing picks up my washing dishes and asks if the wearer is exercising; then fails to notice jump rope (!!).
Absurd. It’s a joke.
It’s decent for seeing notifications and the time.
But then the 1day battery life 😵‍💫.

So why isn't 24 hour battery life enough? Why isn't 18 hrs enough if you can charge your phone at night when sleep. I assume you are sleeping every night, not every other night.
Ok but do I use my iPhone at night ? No, while I can sleep with Apple Watch and what if I go camping one day eh ??? Bro

I suppose they already knew they would have nothing much for this year so they just went a bit slower last year to have something today.
Every 3rd year has been a bust ever since Apple introduced the 3 year update cycle.

I don't get why Apple still releases a "new" watch every year - the iPad doesn't get updated annually anymore, and it's long past time for the Apple Watch to follow suit.

All I can say is the minute I start moving around in the gym my Watch 7 springs to life. YMMV

If I go many days yes but If I go one day, it's cool to don't have everything... Btw why would I bring my phone?
I have no idea. When I go camping, it's wilderness camping with no cell service, electric or even people. So I wouldn't take my iPhone or Apple Watch. For camping I use an old fashioned watch that runs for years. I just assumed that in todays world most people never take their phone out of their hand.
