Amazon this weekend has low prices on the Apple Watch Series 11, with $99 discounts across numerous models of the smartwatch. This sale includes a handful of 42mm and 46mm GPS aluminum models, but cellular devices are a bit more rare this time around.

My series 11 42mm in titanium gold is my first apple watch and ive had it for 6 months and all I do is check time and, notifications there really isnt much a watch can do to keep you on the bleeding edge of state of the art technology. Anyone looking to purchase these are fine.

The AWU1 got 3 years of updates and will continue to get 5-6+ years of security updates. There are still people today using their Apple Watch Series 3 (2017) with the latest iPhone on iOS 27 - doing all the things it did when it was new. An Apple Watch Series 3 vs an Apple Watch today isn't all that much different - it does what it does well and that's why 150-200+ million people wear Apple Watches.

I have family wearing Series 5 watches that are still going strong today - exercising daily (I get the notifications).

For those that are happy with and can get by with a Casio - I highly recommend Casio G-Shocks.

Those of us who use and benefit from an Apple Watch - it is the best watch I've ever worn. This is a really good price for a smart watch that can last a decade or more.

Not in the market, but if I was, it would be a hard pass because of the support cut off from the AW8 and AWU.

Cheaping out and keeping the same processor for 2-3 years has meant that huge swathes of the AW series suddenly lose support.

If we see the Sx processors start to be iterated yoy like the iPhone - i.e. - so they keep up to speed with where Apple's overall platform features are going (basically Apple Intelligence and Siri AI) then I might consider another AW.

But until then, I'm happy to wear mine until it becomes a security hazard.

Apple has always reused CPUs across multiple generations - this isn't the first time they've done this - standard operating procedure for Apple Watch...

They don't "lose support" - they just don't get Watch OS 27 - they will continue to operate like they did the day they were purchased getting security updates and will continue to be supported interacting with the latest iOS for a decade or more...

I'll give you that Apple could have made an AI-less Watch OS 27 for those devices and it would have been better for them and us. I'm sure it was a cost savings move on Apple's part, which I frown on despite the above.

Just recently had my AWS5 switched out for the AWS10 because of their battery life. I suspect that you got that battery switched out? But it is pretty nice hearing another user still using an older product that still works.

Lots of apologists here today, but I agree with you. When you stop offering software updates for the flagship product you were still selling 3 years ago, it’s bad form.

Either the product roadmap is broken or the operating system roadmap is.

You can put all the “my brother in law is still using his Apple Watch 4” spin on it you want. He didn’t pay $800 for it 3 years ago. He probably got it for free as a hand me down from the person that bought that U1 that isn’t getting software upgrades anymore.

You can fruit wash it all you want. I’ll never blow $800 on another Apple Watch. This is my last one. I have other watches that I paid about the same money for that charge in the sun, get time from the atomic clock, and work 100% 15 years after I bought them.

I assume your apologist statement was directed at me?

This isn't the first time Apple has only offered 3 years of OS updates for an Apple Watch. Apple often uses the same chip in multiple Apple Watch generations. Feel free to fact check me on this (I make mistakes).

In my post I criticized Apple for not having an AI-free Watch OS 27 for previous generations that would have helped their environmental friendly look and made people happier - but I guess it wasn't enough for me to not be labeled an "apologist" <shrug>.

If a solar powered, atomic clock updating watch works for you - I highly recommend them. I own a Japanese made G-Shock 5000U and it is amazing, build quality is astounding, and some say its battery can last 22+ years - I love wearing it on sunny days and charging it 🙂.

My wife, for her birthday last month, got a beautiful Japanese made Seiko watch HFE004J that is solar powered and atomic radio updating - leaving Apple Watch after wearing them for almost a decade and I supported her 100%. Looks amazing, doesn't need charging, doesn't need a software update, and will last a lifetime.

And yes, my sister was using my old Apple Watch Series 3 up till last year - donated many years ago 😛. How did you know?

Some people are able to make things last a long time - I've always been one to upgrade every few years - I don't have that discipline. I went AW Ultra because I wanted longer battery life too. Always respected people who could make tech last forever. I see a lot of old tech at the universities (colleges) too.

Yep, I quite literally JUST bought the new Series 11 46mm on Friday at Best Buy (because I had them price match Amazon) I actually bought it on amazon earlier last week but it was stuck in shipping limbo so that'll just get returned if it ever arrives. Anyway yes, it still got text messages, gave me the time, and did the same health measurements it had done to my phone since the day I got it. I had the Series 3 Nike+ Edition and so only as of Friday did I finally retire it. Only reason I upgraded now is because of the $100 off and because the newer watches DO have some cool features that one doesnt. In my case it was better sensors for tracking health metrics, support for Home Key so I can unlock my smart lock at the house with the watch, faster processor (the 3 really is quite sluggish), and once again having the ability to get software and security updates/etc. Just thought it was a good time to go ahead and upgrade with the significant discount. Hopefully the one coming out in a month or so doesnt have super nice things I'll miss 😀

Sure, I meant that they lose major version upgrades far too soon.

I have a S9, so this is academic for me. But if I had an S8...

OK, I could live without Siri AI, as Apple Intelligence was always only promised from the products launched in fall 24.

But I would be mad not to get the following back ported to back ported to 26:

- Liquid Glass UX optimisations - i.e the ones that make LG drain the AW's battery far too fast.
- Plus any other bug fixes and optimisations.
