This morning I noticed that my watch was pretty hot when I took it off the charger but thought nothing of it, however after about 30 mins I noticed that the watch wasn't working, just a blank screen. I've tried doing a reset (pressing home button and crown together for 10+ seconds) and nothing happens. I tried putting it back on charge but it started to get pretty warm again very quickly.

Is it broken and in need of a trip to the Apple Store or is there something else that I can try?

If it won't power on by holding down the power button and it won't power on connected to the charger, it's a hardware issue of some sort that will require a visit to Apple.

mine did the same thing, called apple (closest store is 2 hrs) they had me try a few things over the phone, decieded the watch was toast and sent me a new (refurb) one
had to sent old one back but they never did tell what was actually wrong with it...

all good in the end

Yeah been on to apple and they tried the same thing and decided it's dead. Could've sent it back and had a replacement but takes 5-10 business days so have an appointment at the Apple Store next week instead. No doubt I'll get a refurb, although as I've only had it a few months it would be nice to get a new one.
