boiling actually makes me optimistic. I have a hot tub, and I wasn't even considering daring to wear it in there, but if it can be boiled, I can't imagine a hot tub would do much damage... hmmm...

It is incredibly important to know how long the watch was in that boiling water. I can't remember it there was a cut at that point in the video, but it looked like it was in there for a matter of seconds.

It takes time for heat to travel in toward the vulnerable parts of the watch, so boiling it for a few seconds really doesn't tell us much. 20-30 minutes could very well destroy the watch and cause the battery to explode. That said, if you are keeping it out of the tub and it just gets splashed of falls in for a few seconds you probably don't have to worry.

[edit] sorry, I meant 20-30 minutes in the hot tub... which is a fairly realistic scenario. I'm guessing boiling it for 2 minutes or so would be enough to destroy it...just a guess.

Hurrah... considering for me how useless is that Apple Watch, that was a win-win.

I will remember the skillet next time.

Won't hold up to a skillet impact?

I'm out.

More realistic scenario would be to put it on your wrist and smack it against the corner of the counter or a metal/stone object...

Also, boiling the watch could have altered the pliability of the glass...

Something is coming off but don't know if it is from the grater or from the watch.. LOL:D

BTW some pople are reporting the watch is burning their wrist.

Why????? I have to wait until June, and this is what people who actually could get it are doing to it. What a waste... Sigh

MR: go back to journalism school...!

MR can't help it: writing negative, anti-apple headlines. If you actually watch the video you'll see that 99% of the video shows how incredibly resilient the watch is and how it actually withstands all of the torture, until the very last seconds of the video when it's glass cover is crushed badly. Maybe the headline should say: Apple watch stands up to almost everything.

The soundtrack... The voice... I have it currently open in another tab whilst I write this and if someone walked in I'm sure I'd get a few strange looks.

It's somewhat interesting to know how much a device can take. Hell, Apple could save the world some trouble and just release their own testing footage so we know already.

i wonder how many watches were destroyed for the sake of internet journalism...

Hope they get covered by AppleCare.

This is so stupid. people are waiting for theirs and they are destroying the one they have. Why do these types of videos exist?

I actually find it interesting, to say the least, that people tend to react to these gadget destroying videos with more distress than with videos that show animals or people getting hurt, which are often seen as funny.

Really, are those people laughing at the animals the same people as the ones feeling distress for the devices? How would you even prove that?

Maybe a few do that, but I doubt that laughing at animals getting hurt is generalized.

People also laugh at humans getting their balls kicked in... But in this case, the guy who got kicked usually asked for it, while animals can't choose to get hurt on purpose.

This +1.

Another common real life test would have been to drop it in a toilet.

You really think that dropping it in the toilet for a few seconds (the likely max time it would stay there) is a better test than the guy who swam with it for several minutes ? Something it isn't even rated for.

I think the watch, using that test, already passed the water resistance test with flying colors.

The IPX7 rating covers a typical toilet drop easily, and that's what we saw in the first "tests".

Guys don't forget to protect your watches properly as soon as you get them. :D

Did that guy swim through wine, syrup, soy sauce, ketchup, mustard, natural peanut butter, and Nutella?

That is a more realistic test. We need a swimming pool full of each to properly test this, then mix them all together for more real-world testing.

(yes, I'm having fun... I've had too many responses that questioned absurdity that I was presenting)

Stupid

I don't understand this. If people think this product is overpriced, why would anyone treat this product with such little care as to cause this kind of abuse? How does one accidentally boil a watch? And what does it mean if a product stops working after getting boiled? *smh* /sydht

Most of us take the odd stupid pill but these people were taking them by the hand full. The only thing she forgot was to put it in the crapper then fish it out.

Next test from Sleaze-Net someone will shove it up there bunghole for a day then see if it still works.

I'm not saying that it's the same people, just commenting on human nature in general.

You've got to admit. That poor watch did its best to hold up. But a cast iron skillet. REALLY! A cast firkin Iron skillet. Did anyone really imagine it would survive that.

Even the watch had a frown afterwards...

LOL

What's next.

Oops I accidentally dropped my watch in the garbage disposal...

I wore my apple watch outside in the rain for 12 hours today during dark lord day. No issues what so ever. It is extremely durable.

I hate people who do this, they think it's a good idea to go spend $400 on a smart watch, and immediately destroy it. It's a waste of money and a really nice device.

Well CNet has always disliked Apple since Molly Wood had a bad experience with them. So not surprising. This person was probably told to do it.

I wonder what they would have done if the frying pan hadn't worked. A diamond tipped jackhammer? Lol
