What is the minimum iphone model to use with Apple Watch ultra?

Can I still use the Apple Watch ultra for health benefits or MUST it be synced to an iPhone 8+ to be used…?

I would use the money to buy a better phone.

Meh, I’m not going to use someone else’s iPhone to set it up. The iPhone 7 I have does the job what I need, so all good on that front , but now seeing this new information, I guess I’ll be upgrading very shortly .
