Later this week, Apple will launch the Apple Watch Ultra, a more rugged, capable smartwatch aimed at explorers, adventurers, and athletes. One of the many unique features of the $799 watch is the addition of a third button called the Action button. This article previews what you'll be able to do with it.

Location of the Action Button

Colored in "International Orange," the indented, pill-shaped Action button is located beside the display on the left side of the Apple Watch Ultra's titanium case, in between the dual speakers and the siren.

Activating the Siren

Pressing and holding the Action button will activate the built-in 86-decibel siren, which can be heard from up to 600 feet (180 meters) away, and is meant to be used to attract help during an emergency.

Custom Actions

The Action button is also customizable, meaning it can perform whatever function the user configures for it. Apple Watch Ultra users are able to choose an initial function for the Action button when they set up their device. Later, they can adjust this choice in Settings, where a new section lists apps that support the button.

Apple's examples of what the button can be configured to do include starting Backtrack (which uses GPS data to create a path of where you've been so you can retrace your steps), starting a workout, and beginning a dive.

The Action button can also be assigned to system-level functions, like turning the Flashlight on and off, marking a Compass Waypoint, or starting the Stopwatch. In addition, Apple Watch Ultra users can pause the current function by pressing the Action and Side buttons together.

Assigning Shortcuts

Because the Action button is powered by the new App Intents APIs that Apple released at WWDC in June, Apple Watch Ultra users will be also able to assign Shortcuts to it, bringing huge potential for customization, like the ability to control smart home accessories.

Assigning a dedicated Shortcut to the Action button could also pave the way for additional, adaptive functionality. For instance, Shortcuts with location- or time-based actions could allow the Action button to perform different functions throughout the day.

Multifunction Use With Subsequent Presses

Depending on what app the Action button is being used to control, Apple Watch Ultra users will in some cases be able to choose additional actions for subsequent presses.

Apple envisions people using the Action button without looking at the screen, so a subsequent button press should flow logically from the first press, while also making sense in the current context.

For example, a workout app might let the user start a triathlon with the first button press and switch to another segment with a subsequent press.

It's worth noting however that apps won't be able to assign functions to a long press of the Action button, since watchOS 9 reserves this interaction for the emergency SOS feature.

Final Thoughts

Apple's decision to add a third physical control to the Apple Watch Ultra in the form of the Action button doesn't just allow quick access to a range of system-provided functions. It also hands a new tool to third-party developers that will enable them to bring key app features to users at the press of a button.

Whether Apple intends to bring the Action button to its more affordable Apple Watch Series models in the future is an intriguing question, the answer to which may depend on just how versatile and indispensable it proves to be in the hands of Ultra users.

Priced at $799, the Apple Watch Ultra is available in a single 49mm size, with Trail, Ocean, and Alpine band options available. The new smartwatch can be pre-ordered now and launches alongside the second-generation AirPods Pro this coming Friday, September 23. I may just use it for the sports alerts app. either that or the walk start. Depends on the watch face I plan to use

I have to say, I’m a pretty big fan of the Watch, and have been using one since the original 4/24/2015 launch, and I rarely, if ever, have used the existing side button (besides power cycling for some odd reason).

Would be nice for the existing button to be customizable as well.

I really hope that Apple brings this extra button concept to the regular Series 9 Apple watch next year using a more subtle design to blend in with the non-rugged regular aesthetic, basically exactly the same sort of flush-with-the-case button that is below the crown on current non-Ultra watches. The ability to do things like initiate a workout or launch any other app via configurable single press, double press and long press would be really convenient instead of having to use up a complication or having to go into the app launcher or dock to get to certain functions.

Any chance this one can handle running programs, such as intervals. I know there are apps that can, but looking for something that would be native to the phone. Like Garmin has a way to program intervals like warmup 5 minutes, run 400m, rest 2 minutes, run 400m, etc etc. Some training runs are 11 miles, then 3 fast miles at a select pace, then 1 miles at a slow pace, repeat. With that the chance in intervals is alerted with a beep and vibration

And the crown. I have my most used apps either on complications or in the dock which is currently hard-coded onto a single click of the lower button. That gets me 99% of what I need so I never use the app launcher which means that the single press on the crown to launch the app launcher is a totally wasted user interface element for me and on a small device like a watch with a "narrow" user interface every user interface element is precious. (In the rare cases when I need an app that I can only get to from the launcher I simply scroll to the end of the dock and select "All Apps" to get to the launcher.)

If Apple offered customisation I could move the dock up to the single-press-on-crown action thus freeing up the single press on the lower button for something like workouts.

I love the look, the size, the features.... but I can't get over the SOC version (2 years old? if I am not mistaken)

Personally I will wait for the next version as I already have an S6 and it's good enough for me now at 94% battery health.

Nevertheless, I really love the Ultra and I hope next iteration will make more sense for me.

That would be a nice option too. Press the crown then spin it through recent apps.

Exactly. I have my dock set to permanently show my 10 favourites but I think the dock can alternatively be set to show your 10 most recently used apps so exactly the same customisation as I would set, i.e. the crown single click set up to launch the dock, would get the behaviour you want as long as you set your dock to show most recently used apps rather than the up-to-10 apps you have set as favourites.

All hypothetical unless Apple does do what we are hoping of course.

I really like AW, now it’s matured. At first I found it a bit underwhelming. I too almost never use the side button.

They should make the action button into a Bixby button!

Funny, not sure why but I’ve never really used the dock before. Got so used to hitting crown and trying to find the app I want. Playing with it now though, it feels like such a better solution.
