Hi

I’ve just bought a series 3 Apple Watch. I have unpair my series 2, which gave me an error ‘unpairing unsuccessful’ on my iPhone. When I’ve gone to setup my new watch, the last backup available to select is April 2017. The series 2 Watch appears to have been wiped as it’s now back at the pairing screen.

How do I get today’s backup to setup the new Watch?

Many thanks

M.

Did you remove your Series 2 from your iCloud account before erasing all content and settings?

Actually I think I know what the problem is... the new watch is on an older version of watch os

The last two times my iPhone says that the upairing was unsuccessful, yet it still worked when I asked for it to use that particular backup when repairing. All updates on watch and iPhone X were current.

I’ve had that happen with my former S0. The unpairing still creates a backup, but unpairing fails after the backup has completed. Sometimes you’ll need to go to Settings on the watch and reset from there if unpairing fails. When you go to pair, you’ll see the backup was completed when you tried to unpair.

Right, but you’re iPhone and Apple Watch have to have correlating software to update.

I’ve always thought the way Apple handle restoring backups to devices with older OS versions to be pretty sloppy. I had no way to update the watch before restoring a backup, so I had to set the watch up, update the OS, then unpair it and repair it to be able to restore my latest backup.

It seems like I’m not the only one with unpairing error message. I’m currently talking to Apple senior advisor about this and sent them analytics data file to them after they did a test on my iPhone and watch. This happens every time I tried to unpair.

The error happens every time I unpair a watch no matter which phone/watch combo I am using. It still unpairs though so I've never worried about it. It's been happening for months.

I’m supposed to hear a result from the testing tomorrow. I’ll post an update. I got my s1 in November and unpairing error has been happening since the very 1st time I tried. So far at least 10 times because I was trying to figure it out why and see if I can fix it.
