Would like to get my mum a 40mm 4th gen Apple Watch, interested into the hard fall feature and also into the heart rate monitoring functions but wondering if it can be connected to an Android phone (she is not a techie at all and as such got her an Android smartphone, no need for (another) iPhone in the family.

I am interested in the non LTE model, no need for a watch to behave like a mobile phone nor to pay extra to our carrier for features she will probably never use.

Any suggestion appreciated

Grazie

Sorry, you need an iPhone to pair your AW to. Apple builds high walls to keep customers into its 'ecosystem'.

If you already have an iPhone you can pair your mom's watch to it, and enable cellular on the watch this way no need for another iPhone.

Negative. iPhone only. Cheap iPhone like used 6s will do.

Both my son and I use iPhones, he is on a 6+ and me on a 7+ so I can pair the watch onto mine, to say one, and get warnings etc onto it, is that correct?

Basically I want to use the heart rate monitor features and the accidental falls warnings.

I just got her, a few months ago, an Android phone after the iPhone 5 went bad, won't get her another phone not just for the money, can buy a good used one for affordable now but she'll have to re-learn to use it, so, if I can still get the Watch functionalities the way you suggest I'll do fine to find out if it is of any real utility otherwise my son will be glad to have it.

Fall detection is only any good if the watch is connected. If you want the non LTE model and unless you are within bluetooth range, it will have to be on WiFi (drains the battery quicker than BT).

You are into a lot of hurt, trying to get this to work. Especially for a non techie.

Yes. After an emergency call ends, the Apple Watch alerts your emergency contacts with a text message, unless you choose to cancel. Here you can get more info: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206983.
You should also be able to remotely monitor your mom's heart rate from the iPhone's Health app too.

Just make sure that when you set it up, your mom's watch (1) has cellular enabled (2) your phone number is a registered emergency contact, and (3) is charged. Enabling cellular on your watch might cost you an extra EUR10/mo, you may wanna check that out with your current carrier.

Good luck.

So this feature would only work with the LTE version of the Watch if I got it right, correct?

Uhm, at this point not sure of its utility, you still gotta be a little into it to make at least a basic use of it

The watch has to be connected for this feature to work yes. You can hook it up to the home WiFi, but that would not cover falls outside the house. And without cellular the watch has to be within a 15-30 ft (5-10m) radius from your iPhone.

Apple Watch is a way to lock you into the Apple world and they really make it hard for Android users.
