There's a watch for everyone, I hate when people complain that $350 is alot for the apple watch, its a great price point when a Moto 360 is around $300. Plus, $350 will get you the same watch as the guy who bought the $10000 gold edition.

Why would you hate the fact that people complain about prices? If more people did, perhaps prices would be lower? Would you have a problem with lower price on the Apple watch?

You just did what Apple and all other companies do. You evaluate the price based on what others are charging, instead of the cost of design, build, logistics plus a fair markup.

----------

You obviously have no idea what it's like to work in TV production, so please don't infer what my clients expect or perceive, or give me business advice, unless you're Tim Cook trolling. :roll eyes:

The bottom line is, I want some of the features of a smart watch, I want it to work well with my iPhone, and, as a watch collector, I want it to be well made. The Apple Watch is all there is that meets that criteria, and I don't mind spending a grand on one.

But now you're being honest on what your reasons are for buying one. I have no idea what it's like to work in TV production but I do know that excellent tv is being made ahead of the Apple watch being released. Will tv get even better after April? Perhaps, but not because of the Apple watch. Will you be able to do your job better? If you can't do your job excellently without the Apple watch then you're not good enough or the playing field isn't very fair for you. To be clear, I'm not suggesting that you are bad at your job.

I do think the Apple Watch is made the best and the sport is $50 dollars more then the Moto 360

There's always better. You're saying the same thing that many of us said about smart phones 7 years ago.

I'm really not sure what you're arguing? I shouldn't buy an Apple Watch at all? I shouldn't spend the extra money of the steel over the Sports model? Maybe I should sell my smart phone altogether, because its convenience isn't necessary?

No I'm saying that you have two reasons to buy it. You first told us your business reason as it being the most important. But you can find those function elsewhere for cheaper. Your real reason is personal choice. You want the Apple watch not for convenience as you can already get that. You want it because you like watches and gadgets.

Which proves my point. You price it relevant to what other devices cost.

There are many more reasons than that. That's what you have to understand about wearables. They're a blend of technology and style. In this particular case, there is no smart watch for iPhone that offers the features of the Apple Watch, and there's no smart watch as nicely built, either. It's win win.

Well actually no. If you need notifications in a good looking watch, there is the garmin fenix 3. There is less compromise with that watch as it has better battery life, gps and 100m water resistance. The truth is, you want the latest Apple device. No shame in that. Plenty of people do. But you can't justify it as a requirement in your life. It's frills.

Notifications are a small fraction of what the Apple Watch does, and the Garmin doesn't hold a candle to the notifications of the Apple watch. BTW, I have a Garmin smart band already. It's glitchy and the notifications are rudimentary. Plus, they're all ugly.

Your review of the Apple watch is mostly baseless as you haven't got one yet. The Garmin notifications work just fine and are most likely to work for longer considering better battery life. The Garmin band you have doesn't represent them all. What are the many things the Apple watch can do that the Garmin Fenix 3 cannot? And I'm talking useful stuff, not gimmicky stuff.

Also, the Fenix 3 is a classy looking watch. The metal band version is also much cheaper than the Apple watch SS with steel strap.

It can't even respond to texts. I'm even looking forward to answering calls on the Apple Watch in my office, since people tend to use speakerphones with multiple people in my line of work.

That fact that you said the Fenix 3 is a classy looking watch ends my discussion with you entirely, because we're worlds apart.

If you go down that road, there's very little that anyone actually NEEDS.

I'm really excited about this watch, there are a lot of times when I can't have my phone out and I'm paranoid I missed a call from my kids' school, or if I missed a text from them when they're home alone. While I can't have my phone out, I can easily glance at my wrist to see notifications so if something important pops up I will know right away. When I'm with other people I feel it's rude to be on my phone, so it will be nice to leave it put away but not worry that I might miss an emergency. I suppose it doesn't HAVE to be an Apple watch, but I don't want to have to make something work. I just want it to work together with no effort on my part.

You haven't used an Apple watch to respond to texts yet and so don't know how useful it will be or even if it will be any good. If you need to respond, pull your phone out, you know you have it on you. You'll most likely need to anyway as Apple watch responses are more suggestive than accurate.

The fact you want to be able to answer your phone on your watch definitely sets us worlds apart. The first person that does that on the train I'm on without headphones is going to get the death stare from me.

You can't just have the phone on you and hear it or feel it vibrate? There's no shame in having to look at your phone when it rings. An emergency is most likely going to be a phone call right?

The Fenix 3 looks gigantic...over 50mm by 50mm mammoth. I have confidence that apples software with follow suit and work well in their ecosystem and be leaps and bounds superior than pebble and other competition. I agree some of features are really gimmicky, but you don't have to use them. I know I won't

You could be right. But version one is not there yet. It's not just software though. Obviously it is missing key hardware.

It doesn't fit in my pockets so I wear a belt bag to carry it and don't always feel the vibration. And my kids would seriously text me to say the house is on fire. I don't work at a desk where I can have my phone sitting there in front of me, so it would be useful to know if I need to bother to stop what I'm doing, dig my phone out and respond. Or, I suppose I can just answer an emergency call right on the watch.

A lot of money for being able to respond to an emergency. How have we as a species coped until now? It's hardly your main reason (even if the most valid) for buying an Apple Watch?

It is my main reason actually, I rarely wear a watch. However, I'm trying to convince hubby that he wants a watch too so I can send him my heartbeat! Lol! How's that for a reason? :p

As good a reason as any for buying it. Justifying the money doesn't come into it for most people. They want the new gadgets and their gimmicky functions. You've even justified buying two watches for a gimmicky reason. I'm not judging you by the way. My opinion though is that there is really no point in trying to justify a purchase of an Apple Watch. It doesn't do enough for the money.

For some it won't have to do anything for the money. Some people will spend the £15k just to have it on their wrist.

I can see someone who earns £10/hr wanting it to do more, and slagging it off because they don't want to spend over a weeks salary on one, more so than someone who earns £100/hr and getting one just for the experience.

The smart watch hasn't been done right until now, and if Apples new product is anything like the iPod, iPhone and iPad which everyone doomed to failure, then I want to be part of it.

Great thread, OP.

:apple: :D

So the Sport it is, and if I like it (I don't wear a watch now), I will buy the steel version when second or third generation comes out :)

Pretty much the same. I have never really found the need to wear a watch to tell the time. I'm usually around clocks all the time. However, I've more recently found myself needing a watch and I would rather have the Apple Watch that looks great and does so much, then some $20 Walmart/TIMEX cheapo. The big selling point for me was Siri right there on my wrist. Idk about you, but I use Siri all day. She's great. Having her on my wrist is even better.

The wrist is valuable space IMO. I think a watch has to do a lot otherwise it has no plans for me.

Space Gray, 42mm Sport for me please.

Justifying the money doesn't come into it for most people. They want the new gadgets and their gimmicky functions.

Suit yourself; the Watch IMO is going to change everything. It could, some day, replace most of the functions of your phone. Dictation will be so good that keyboards won't be needed. They will have cameras built in for video chats and photo taking. You would be able to make phone calls via a cellular network without the need of a phone.

Are some of the features gimmicky? Sure, in fact I'll probably never use Digital Touch. However to say the watch as a whole is a gimmick or a waste is untrue. I see it taking off like the smartphone.

I don't currently use Siri, as she doesn't understand Danish yet. However, that will change with 8.3 where there should be full support for Danish.

But I have used danish dictation A LOT recently, and it's awesome. I can think of so many use cases with the Watch, and I think it can take over 60% of the time where I use my iPhone. Have multiple use cases where the Watch can do the same task right on my wrist.

Will be buying from Germany, since Apple doesn't have Denmark in first wave.

Just because you think all the features are gimmicky doesn't mean we all agree. That's your opinion, and not "fact"

A dumb watch is really a waste of wrist space.

I whole heartedly disagree... I own several high end mechanical watches (Oris, Lum Tec, Panerai). The engineering that go into those are amazing and they are each piece or art.

To each is own sir, but you probably are referring to your Fossil or something, and just don't appreciate a fine mechanical watch for what it is. There is nothing dumb about the engineering in a fine mechanical movement.

Just this guys opinion.

That being said I am picking up an Apple watch on launch day. But the one I want is $599.

Apple Watch - Why, I get it!

Just because you think all the features are gimmicky doesn't mean we all agree. That's your opinion, and not "fact"

I owned the first iPhone day one and I heard from everyone how gimmicky it was, that it cost too much, and that it could do too little but look where we are today. Now I hear the same things about the watch. I'm excited to have the watch on day one and see where we go from here. This is a new product, with developers in the game creating apps who knows where we could go and market competition will only force further innovation in my opinion! The first iPhone didn't hit it out of the ballpark but it laid the foundation for what we know today as I hope the watch will as well.

I could see two benefits for some having a iWatch.

1. Battery life improvement on the main iPhone. Screen-ON time is the largest battery killer. More so than a phone call. Every Facebook post, message, etc, flashes the huge screen. And I'm compulsive about pulling the phone out of my pocket to check it's importance.

Diverting that notification to the watch would keep the iPhone screen off. Ignoring a email or text, or a simple answer to a text from the watch would help. Only the watch would suffer, but it's meant to be a daily device regardless.

2. Less phone dropping. Nearly every time I've dropped a phone it is related to the process of removing the phone from my pocket. Severely worse in winter or rain. It's always the slow motion fumble
, based on a one-handed maneuver. Not pulling the phone out for every vibrate would decrease accidents. Just check the importance of the message or post and answer when necessary. Hey, it might change my whole case criteria and I might be able to go naked even!

A few small benefits, although I'm sure it wasn't designed solely for that purpose.

It is still missing important things for a device like this:
1-Blood pressure monitoring
2-Sleep monitoring
3-The face is square only, I prefer a circular one.
4-Battery that doesn't need to be charged every single day
5-Need iPhone for GPS

Would it resist a beach trip ?
