I have an iPhone 11 Pro max and the latest Apple Watch series 6. Ive preordered the iPhone 12 pro max and it’s coming next Friday but I’ve sold my phone and I have to send it tomorrow. I know you need an iPhone to activate the Watch but once I wipe my ip11 and send it, will it make the Watch unusable? Sure I read somewhere that it has to connect to the phone every 30 days? If so will my Watch still work for a week and be able to make and take calls etc?

You won’t have any functionality on the watch except displaying time and recording workout and heart rate.

The watch can do tons of things especially over Cellular and WiFi - iMessage and phone calls yes, no SMS. Lots of apps work standalone - Outcast is my favorite standalone podcast app.

If you don’t have a phone, iMessage or call will not work.

Will you be unpairing the watch from the phone before you send it in? Do you have any data on the watch which you want to preserve?

If you unpair the watch and then make a couple of backups of the iphone then I think you should be ok with any existing watch data.

That’s just not accurate you can power off your phone entirely and those features do still work - my glitchy old SE constantly wont turn on for hours on end and in those situations my watch is a lifesaver! If you unpair your watch from your phone then yes the watch is more or less useless, but if you keep it paired and simply wipe your iPhone without unpairing your watch then the watch will still be good to go.

Are you sure about this?

How does the watch get the messages or calls when the phone is not connected to the internet?

The watch can connect to the same wifi networks as the phone

You can even enter WiFi passwords on the watch without the phone and use cellular if setup prior to wiping your iPhone.

That’s fine but the messages and calls actually get delivered to the phone and then pushed to the watch. Unless we’re strictly talking about FaceTime and iMessages. Any other alternative won’t work.

Edit - ah I just realised I had a brain freeze and was talking about iMessage not being delivered to the watch. Never mind. Ignore me. Sorry for the confusion.

Yup SMS and notifications from apps are the only things required to have your phone on somewhere in the world.
