You also get assigned a telephone number from your provider, so it's not just cellular data, it's a phone number.
Yeah but only if it’s an LTE Apple Watch. A wifi only Apple Watch has no connectivity and can’t call 911 if the paired phone isn’t nearby and there’s no wifi, such as in the situations shown in the ad.

I was thinking that
and
they also need to enter that annoying 6 digit code and press ok, with their hand in a shark's mouth.

Every TV commercial i seen during these college football games are "in your face" lying
except for stella Atrios.
No they don’t. You only have to enter the 4 or 6 digit passcode when you put on the watch. After that, the watch stays unlocked until you take it off your wrist. Clearly you’ve never owned an Apple Watch.

I have a wifi only watch (series 4). Its linked to my phone and I can recieve and make phone calls using that watch. To be honest, I wish their cellular compatible version of the watch would work without needing to be tied to an online iPhone at all for texts and phone calls, but I have no problems using my wifi only watch for calls.

Yeah but you can only make calls using the watch if your iphone is nearby. In a situation such as those shown in Apple’s ad, where the paired iphone is nowhere nearby, you wouldn’t be able to call 911 from a wifi only Apple Watch even if it were the latest model. Only the cellular models can do that.

It's the same way they sold so many of those Life Alert bracelets in the 80's and 90's.

Nope, dont need 1

My only issue with the ad is that they should have made it more obvious from the start that this was an Apple Watch ad. I saw about half of it and thought it was a promo for the 911 TV show so I flipped the channel.

For future reference, even if your post is a ‘joke’ as you stated, it helps to put a ‘/S’ at the end of your post, that basically is like the official indicator it’s actually a joke of what you posted. Not everybody shares your interpretation of a joke over text on a discussion site, which is why I replied to you in the context that I did.

But I do appreciate the explanation.
Yeah, I should have done that, especially in the context of 911 and etc. Thanks for the reminder. No one else thinks he sounds like a cop, huh.

As my Apple Watch 6 basically saved my life my life due to the blood-oxygen level as low (below 90). This was shown on the hospital ER Doctor's Admission Reports stating: 'initial diagnosis for Covid was provided by patient's Apple Watch'... patient drove himself to ER upon recognizing the signs; and a positive test the same hour. I guess I will cherish Watch 6 forever and certainly buy the next one; but mount this one in a place of honor. By the way the next one hopefully will have Rockley Photonics sensors that can detect glucose/blood sugar and maybe blood pressure. Health 'clinic on your wrist' revolution continues. Feel free to convey to Apple; I'd make a testimonial if they wished and have the hospital records that show the diagnosis by Apple Watch. 3 months later I recovered fully.
Could I ask if your blood oxygen was below 90 consistently? I've gotten an 89 or 88 once or twice while sleeping on my back, but it was a singular reading. I got the Watch 6 in particular to monitor blood oxygen while I sleep, and I do notice that higher readings correspond to better sleep for me.

Cellular version Apple Watch 3 in 2017

I sleep easier at night knowing my mom has an Apple Watch with cell service. She’s not so old to need assisted living, but if she fell in her basement, no one would come looking for days.

Feature Idea: An option to call 911 when your heart rate jumps above a threshold without a commensurate increase in activity, ie detects a non exercise-induced increase in heart rate, which is indicative of an emergency situation, like being seriously injured or a victim of a crime. The watch can prompt to call 911 with a single, easy press on screen or alternately, call 911 automatically if you fail to respond to a prompt to call 911 after a certain amount of time in case you're incapacitated.
Watching sports can trigger alerts also.

No. You can read about the insane increase in false-alarm 911 calls already from these types of devices. They force responders to locations where no one needs help to verify the unwitting person (often kids) werent harmed. Sometimes even when the caller verbally tells the dispatcher they are ok.

Plus, you get intimate with someone and your heart rate goes up. Pranks… heart rate goes up… fall during a dream - you practically die. Sure you could manually deactivate 911 services… in the middle of play time - or worse forget to turn it off and have a firefighter/officer at your front door.

If it were to give you the option to cancel, it would have to notify you it was happening. If it did that, you would hear it which would defeat the purpose of being a a secret during an assault or crime.

Right now, you can hold the button down and call with a flick… it’s like someone at apple already considered these things.

Every false-alarm scenario you described would be excluded by either detected motion of the wearer or the fact the wearer has to actually engage with the watch to call 911 since the automatic 911 call case would obviously need to have a very high heuristic threshold.

how many people with a wifi only watch will see this commercial and think they have 911 and then try to use it in an emergency? Maybe they should do what Tesla does - include a cellular chip in every watch and then just charge you the premium cost to activate it
That a great idea. Keep in mind, you can call 911 from your Apple Watch anytime your iPhone is nearby. WiFi isn't required.

The problem is “iPhone needs to be nearby”. Apple Watch Wi-Fi version cannot call 911 on its own. And this is that post’s whole point.

On second thought, why Apple sells Wi-Fi only watch at all? every finish except aluminium has no Wi-Fi only model anymore. Why bother? We have Apple Watch SE for “budget” option now.

I've seen several in the UK and they are certainly hitting home. Excellent adverts
I don’t want TV anymore. Cut the cord and just use my Apple TV and various streaming services so this is the first advert for the Apple Watch I’ve seen in a while. I have to admit it was a very powerful advert. No fancy product shots, just people and true life stories.

Agreed, but I live in a cell phone challenged area, right now I still only get 1 bar of 3G signal most of the time at home, so when I bought the watch and I didn’t know how well it would work as a phone (honestly, a lot better than I expected) I didn’t want to pay extra for the phone and for the service. I think Verizon charges $10 for each add on device like iPads and watches that you use. Verizon also let’s you connect to their phone network thru WIFI, so my phone works ok if my home network is up and running.

When I get a new watch, either next year or the year after depending on what new features are available it will be a cellular version and not a WiFi only. It works fine for taking calls as well as texts so I don’t mind spending a little extra so if I forget my phone I can still get that message.

Then that defeats the purpose altogether. If the “user has to engage the watch”. It already has a button.

Plus, good luck getting repeatable studies on muggings and attacks for body responses and movements that accurately detect crime from pranks… especially when all people react differently - flight/fight/freeze responses.

Do not hold your breath. This isn’t gonna happen. Now, on the other hand, a car crash feature, maybe…

The world doesn't hold its breath for those who only understand how something can't work.
