I keep getting this message no matter how I try (upgrade eligible or new number):

"Based on the information you provided, Verizon Wireless may require a deposit in order to purchase a new iPhone. You can pay this deposit and, subject to availability, purchase an iPhone at an Apple Store."

I spoke to Verizon and they have no idea why. I was never late with payment and have 5 phones on my account.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I got this message, and unlike you, I was able to receive help from Verizon (over the phone) and the Apple employees (physically in the store). Two things that had conspired to screw me over, and might be the cause of your problem if you're just coming across this thread:

  • A previous snafu by Verizon support had ‘split’ my account into multiple seperate plans for each line (!), and yesterday, Verizon support had helped me fixed that by re-merging them all and getting them updated to the brand-new Verizon Unlimited plan … but this had marked my account in their system as a young account, which apparently aren't allowed to use the iPhone Upgrade Program or something like that? idk the details, but they fixed that over the phone, as I am actually a long-time customer;
  • and during that support session, they'd canceled-out a huge pending/unpaid balance that had incorrectly grown on my account … but that hadn't yet processed, so my account was showing an unpaid balance, which *also* prevents use of the iPhone Upgrade Program. They fixed this over the phone as well.

Hopefully this helps someone! <3
