This is not true. It takes all of 2 minutes or less to set up Hangouts. Which works better than Facetime.
Yes please. Even more of my personal interactions to be collected, analyzed, indexed and tagged on Google's servers. Dreamy!

Feet firmly planted...I wasnt aware Cnet was an exclusive Android site. You have a link to a different version of the site?
No effect on day one. It certainly does affect their willingness to provide support long-term if their $1.49 profit is contingent can be wiped away by a single tech support call or bug fix. This is certainly a problem for Android where even Google has declared it an official 'tradition' to only provide software updates to their Nexus phones for one year vs. 4 years for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.
Furthermore, if the market is commoditized sufficiently, there isn't enough profit incentive to support innovation. Innovation in the PC market is basically gone- most consumers are happy with PCs that are 5+ years old running an OS that is 10+ years old not because their devices work optimally but because nobody has made any compelling improvements in ages. I'd hate to see that happen to other markets I care about.

Still 78% of android users own a device with a display between 3.5 and 4.3" ....
Fandroid still speaking about Google market share are ignoring, on purpose , that android is popular thanks to the huge number of cheap crappy low end smartphone on the market (galaxy ace and similar) sold for less than 150 $ ....
Personally, I couldn't care less about market share one way or another. I speak strictly from a consumer standpoint.
Each platform has it's overzealous fans that will shy away from any rational thought and cheerlead regardless.
That said, Samsung Galaxy S4s and Note 3s have sold well, which means many people are choosing that (large screen) platform, myself and the wife included. They're not all cheap POSes.
I feel Apple is being (greatly) profitable despite them not going after the customer that prefers a large screen phone. But at the same time, they're opening it up for Android to steal customers away by not playing in the space.
I am that guy. I suddenly realized, after switching, that I don't really need Apple's (exclusive) ecosystem to do what I want. As such, my purchase of Apple products will decline in the future (after being exclusively Apple for 13 years). It was Apple that provided competitors that opportunity, by being inflexible.
By all means, buy from whoever you want. However, there can be no doubt which company is winning the smartphone wars- the one making the most money. That is after all what companies are designed to do.As long as the phone I buy is from a company that will be around for a few years, I should be ok. I can re-evaluate things when it's time for my next phone. I really don't think a company needs to make $50 billion a year in profits to stay in business. As long as they are turning enough profit to stay in business, I as Joe Consumer could care less about bragging about how company x makes more money than company y when I have no vested interest in either. But that's just me.
There are several nice new computers on the Windows side of the market and plenty of innovation with all the variations on convertibles, removable screens, flip screens etc. Many different approaches have been taken. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean there hasn't been anything new. There are ssd's, touchscreens, hybrid drives, hybrid computers etc. Again, you can shoot them down all you want, but they are out there. Optimally doesn't have to be only the Apple way.

As for your absurd claims that innovation still exists in the PC market- innovative markets don't shrink on a planet with a rising population.
A pointless digression (which company YOU want to buy from) in a discussion about which company is better placed in the US smartphone market (what this article is actually about) does not constitute trying to have a discussion. Nor does making ridiculous claims (the stagnant/shrinking PC market in 2014 is innovative) contribute to good debate. Innovating is making a difference in people's lives. If you 'innovate' and people would rather keep their old PC you aren't innovating. Period.I figured it would be pointless to try to have a discussion, but I gave it a shot.
Apple and samsung are growing but BlackBerry is shrinking...![]()
Yep you'll find different groups of people buy them IMO.
I'm in IT and 99% of people use really ugly Androids (not saying they are all ugly - just my group buys the less stylish ones) with massive screens. Most also do daggy things like have their ringtone on full (rather than silent because it's like... work.) They HATE Apple with a passion (always have... these guys would have been arguing for DOS over MacOS back in the day definitely... 'nah man you need the power of a DOS command prompt with no mouse and a zillion keys on the keyboard! Apple and their GUI b/s will never make it!!!' Then as soon as M$ copied MacOS they jumped on the GUI bandwagon simply because it wasn't Apple. People are like that and I work with them... not a good thing or a bad thing BTW.)
Most have the impression that these phones suite their ultra-nerdy needs. This is interesting because I'm just as nerdy/more nerdy (I'm a software developer) BUT I like Apple's mixture of smooth development techniques and style. Nerds don't need to use big chunky equipment I swear!
When I'm with my friends, we all use iPhones... [period.] But most are like me... creative nerds rather than database dudes/bored manual testers.
Once you come back to planet Earth, go to Cnet and other sites Then let us know what you think about the Apple bashing or anti Apple comments

This.
I don't trust Google on anything .....
How could someone support a company whose primary goal is data mining is well beyond my comprehension .....
Rubbish, plenty of people buy S4's etc and are not super nerdy types. My wife has a S4 and she has no idea about IT.
You are very much off the mark in my opinion.

I love these absurd, baseless claims that if Apple does XYZ, then people will just absolutely abandon Android like a sinking ship.
Does anyone on this site realize there are LOTS of people in the world who can afford and have either Android or iPhone and CHOOSE Android?
Windows/Android users install anti-viris programs galore but don't avoid the biggest keylogging/data mining/marketing service on the web.
What is it that you think Google does with this data that Apple doesn't?

Maybe is because there are people, like you, who clearly has no interest in iOS devices but keep posting , defending Google and Samsung, in iOS sections of this forum ...
You just said you'll never buy an iPhone, no matter what ... well, why are you speaking about android here ?

If hangout is the service Google is offering to the world, well, I'm very happy with the "close" iMessage ....
Or they are like myself and use both on a daily basis...
That is fine - the posts that I was referring to pop up all the time on here though. If Apple does (something, larger screen, cheaper device, whatever) then people will just throw their Androids in the trash, scream HALLELUJAH and run to their nearest Apple Store. It's simply just not true.
It's definitely not the case. I think that I couldn't really give up the freedom that Android gives me. I also find that I'd be unhappy to be forced into a larger iPhone when it's current size is perfect (for me). The two phones I have fit totally different needs from each other. I had never owned an iPhone or other iOS device prior to recently. I got it due to the fact that it doesn't drop calls like it's going out of style. While I love Samsung and their gorgeous phablets (I have a Note 3), it's just not practical as a phone in my daily life. Too big, signal is too unstable, and I'm a multi-tasking type. Try holding that phone with your shoulder and ear. LOL....
So for now I'm a part of both "ecosystems".
Sorry where did I claim:
a) That only super nerdy people buy Androids.
b) That super nerdy types buy S4s.
You sir, are off the mark.

Ha you sound like me. I also own a Note 3. Luckily I make phone calls on it very infrequently, so for things I do use it for, it's fantastic. I think a lot of people forget about true usability. Yeah, I mean, if I was on the phone or something 8 hours a day, sure there's no way I'd be using a Note 3. But for what I do, which is my own personal deal, it fits the bill. That's why I can't stand it when people in one breath say how Android sucks because all of these phones exist but in the same breath they say once Apple diversifies their lineup (just like Android) they'll achieve total world domination. Ah well. Message boards!![]()
