Apple today announced that developers will be able to submit new and updated app submissions via App Store Connect throughout the upcoming holiday season.

Apple notes that the app review process may take longer from November 24 to November 28 and from December 23 to December 27:
This year, we're pleased to continue accepting submissions in App Store Connect throughout the upcoming holidays. Make sure your apps are up to date and ready for the busiest season on the App Store. Due to anticipated high volume, plan to send time-sensitive submissions early. Please note that reviews may take longer to complete from November 24 to 28 and December 23 to 27.
This marks a change from previous years when App Store Connect would not accept submissions during the holiday season.

I always found it odd that during a peak time for new devices developers couldn’t make any changes.
Not weird at all. Apps should be shaken out by the Holiday season. Devs are more likely to push a broken update in a rush to go on their own vacations... then it makes Apple look bad when everyone unboxed new devices and apps don't work.

Not to mention, it reduces load on the App Store because the usual companies with their useless weekly 250mb-500mb+ updates aren't sending stuff out. Then new devices have more bandwidth on Apple servers at the very busy season.

I don't like the direction things are going. For instance, I get no time off for Christmas and New Years this year. I have to use time off from my 10 day per year vacation allowance. This is because they fall on a weekend. Typically in the past companies would give the day before off if it fell on a Saturday and the day after if it fell on a Sunday. So "the holidays" is no different than a normal week. The pace of our work typically slows during this time, but with more companies adopting policies like this I doubt that will be the case for many more years.

After all, the most important thing is making money money money. /s

Yes, even big corps running cloud services put their operations into "chill" mode around Christmas: no non-emergency production code or config changes allowed. Can't afford to screw something up when the right person to fix it isn't in the office (or online) and customers are shopping.

Not really. At my own company, we don't release new features in December. It's a peak traffic month so the consequences of a bug slipping through QA are greater than normal. We will release bug fixes during the month, but only if the bug is deemed to be sufficiently critical where the harms of accidentally introducing another bug are lesser than the harm of just letting the current bug remain until January.

This isn’t a thing. At last check, the App Store’s content delivery runs mostly if not fully on AWS. “More bandwidth” is trivial for Amazon, and by extension Apple, to deliver as needed.

One of the advantages that Apple gets by having a large chunk of the workforce working from home.
How so? While the workforce may be remote, they are still entitled to take vacation. Working remotely does not mean you won't take your vacation time during the holiday season. Remote workers do and should take time away from work to spend with their family and friends.

I always assumed the freeze was designed to prevent manipulations of app store rankings. Of course, developers would put their apps on sale the week before the freeze and then raise prices just in time to secure a high rank with a high price. So it never really worked.

Just like my thinking doesn't really work, wouldn't forcing updates earlier in December cause broken apps to not only get pushed out sooner delay fixes since the developer can't resolve the issue?
