Uh, no.

The distortion is a wide oval shape. Unless the OP is a Sesame Street character, that's not a reflection

It's clearly a reflection. You can even see their bracelet on the right hand side of the screen, the hand they are holding the camera with (you can also see their elbow and the line of their shirt sleeve.)

Try taking a head-on photo of a glossy monitor (or a piece of glass which is basically the same thing) without getting a reflection of yourself. You will struggle.

Don't think anyone here disagreed that there's also some reflection as well, however you're looking at a different area than the two @JPack highlighted.

In addition, look at the reflection you marked, then down below where JPack highlighted. Compare the matt fuzziness of the reflection to the harsh lines of that paler area. Why would that paler area have such jagged edges if it's the same reflection of the very fuzzy hand?

The lines they put arrows next to are the left and right side of the person's body. Look at them in context of the area I circled, and the reflection of the head in the black trim of the top. It is all a reflection of one person.

The variations in colour/texture could be a variety of things - the colour of the desktop background, finger prints on the screen, the angle, other light sources etc. The OP is referring to the lines on the top inch of the screen.

Does not explain the harsh jagged lines compared to the fuzz of the reflection. I'm not going to respond again unless you can explain why that area has harsh jagged lines and the rest of the reflection is fuzzy...

Look at the top black bezel of the screen, it is covered in greasy fingerprints. I think it's safe to assume the whole screen is equally messy, being owned by a 12 year old.

Looking at the edges, it looks more like the coating coming off during cleaning. If it is dirt, then holy moly ... clean that screen. That’s actually kinda gross. If it has been cleaned, then staingate it to Apple.

Regarding the rest of the screen, too much noise on the display to know for certain. Need to see a photo of the screen with a black background. That blurred background, combined with reflection, just makes it pointless to even consider that area of the screen, IMO.

Top right hand corner of my 27 iMac has same as that's where I put my hand to move it to plug USB in. I wipe it every so often. She may not have cleaned it as often, so no. If, and I doubt it as kids are tech savvy, she thought it was touch screen ala we presume her iPad, she'd of stopped poking at it. Still seems insurance job though.

What a gross looking laptop!! From corner to corner it looks like it was handled by a 7 year old let alone a 12 year old. I'm sorry to say but the condition of this laptop says a lot about how well it wasn't maintain. At least clean the dang thing before taking it in to Apple and maybe they would have given you more credibility. Other than that, it looks like water damaged and someone is not fessing up.

I'm curious as to how people can deduce so much about the history and usage of this laptop from a single photo. The screen has fingerprints on it, how scandalous! Clearly it's been through a washing machine!

OP, if Apple refuse to budge, contact whatever consumer protection body you have in the UK and explain the case to them to see if they're able to offer any advice or act on your behalf.

There are obvious signs of liquid damage from your photo.

I'm not surprised they called your daughter a liar. The evidence is right in front of your eyes. It's like asking someone to show you evidence the sun is bright.

Typical LCD failures don't result in the color gradient shown in your photo. A cracked LCD for example, would show distinct blotches like an ink leak.

Your best bet is to plead guilty and ask for an exception from a Genius.
