wireless keyboard not recognized

I had the same problem, until I accidently discovered that my wireless keyboard had somehow been paired with my iphone! Since it can't be paired with more than one device- voila! Problem solved. Hope this helps someone.

I discovered my problem

After a week I discovered that the reason my bluetooth keyboard wasn't synchronizing was a sleeping laptop. Even while sleeping it was interfering with my synchronization attempts. I turned off bluetooth on that computer and I was able to sync the keyboard after a power cycle.

Found solution!!! :)

Hello.
After about 4 years of working perfectly (besides some months ago the need of putting the aluminum foil in the battery contact after the keyboard died) my daughter's Apple wireless keyboard, working with an iMac started many, or all the symptoms mentioned in this thread.
First thing I did, was researching the web. I found I'm not alone. :)
Then I called AppleCare (was naive) and told the rep that I think I'm entitled to free support for this problem, since it's an ongoing one and it is not only mine.
He was very nice but said that he must follow Apple's policy, I don't qualify for free support. He offered me for $49 a one case support. He mentioned that he doesn't even commit to solve the problem, all he can do is try to troubleshoot. He also told me I can take the keyboard to a Genius Bar and get 15 first minutes for free, after that, if need more time, need to pay. (The closest Apple store is about an hour drive, so I decided to leave it as a last resort).

Personally, I think this Apple's policy stinks. If there is a problem with their merchandise (and obviously, if there is a thread like here, for almost 4 years, and there are other forums too, THERE IS A PROBLEM, and it is not an isolated case) Apple should step forward and take the responsibility and take care of it from A to Z for free.

Anyway, what I did:
I collected some of the solutions I read online, tried it and... for 10 days it's working again, flawless. (I waited all those days to post, to make sure the problem was solved)

1**- Went all over my house and made sure that ALL bluetooth devices are off (all phones, GPS, laptops, absolutely anything) to avoid interference.

2**- Did about 5 consecutive times PRAM and NVRAM reset.
(For those who need, I posted how to do it at the end of my post)

3**- Turned computer off. Booted in Safe Mode.
(For those who need, I posted how to do it at the end of my post)

Find folder User-Library-Preferences
move files:
com.apple.systempeferences.plist
com.apple.universalaccess.plist
to Desktop
Restart computer
Test to see if problem still exists
If not trash the two files moved to desktop.

Actually, you can also disable the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option in the Apple Built-In Bluetooth properties in the Power Management tab. (Older models/OS's?)

As said, did that, working perfectly again since.
Hope it helps someone.

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM (From Apple's support site)

Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models)

Boot into safe mode (from apple’s site)
For Mac OS X 10.3, Mac OS X 10.2, Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.6, Mac OS X 10.5
To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), do this:
1. Be sure your Mac is shut down.
2. Press the power button.
3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup in Mac OS X v10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. During startup in Mac OS X v10.2 through v10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.

Preventing items from opening when you log in.
If the login window appears when you start up your computer, hold down the Shift key and click the Login button. Continue to hold down the Shift key until you see the Dock.

To leave Safe Mode, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.)

Wireless Keyboard Fix

Dear Users,

After several hours this evening/morning, attempting to fix my wireless keyboard, with God's help and much patience, I found a solution that I hope will be useful to the gracious members of this forum.

I simply deleted all of my Bluetooth plist files in Library/Preferences. There was a large collection of them, about 20 files, a number which roughly corresponds to the number of times I attempted to reconnect the keyboard. Perhaps there is a connection?

After that, I went through the process in System Preferences of adding the new keyboard through the Bluetooth module, not through the keyboard module, pressed the power button on the keyboard, typed in the passcode, and it worked.
