Apple Won't Change Hide My Email Domain After Backlash

So it had several, all of which I wanted gone. 4 of them I could "deactivate" but 2 had a name and a Manage Settings option... and THAAT seemed to only be about changing the forwarding address. Oh, I goess "stop using Apple Account" is the way to get rid of them. Seemed to work.

Still the question is how to create outside of Mail... so I see a Custom Email b utton, BUT that talks about using a Custom Domain... what the frak does that mean? Oh great, it wants me tio sgn in, go thourgh some 2 step verification which I never agreed to. Oh NOW I see they were talking about USING my private domain (which I have)... then something about needing to use icloud mail (whatever the frak that is). What idiot designs this crap?

So another several clicks and I see where to ac tually create a "custom" email. So it looks like if I come across a web page looking for my email address and I want to use some an anonymity, I had spend spend a dozen clicks to create the address. NOW I find what may be a shorter process... click on Hide My Email, click on the plus symbol, click on a "continue," and NOW I see a custom address. EXCEPT now I have to go get a pen and paper because it is impossible to copy the damn thning, I have to write it put (then type it where I want to. Oh wait, IF I added som e exgtra stuff I get another "continue" and evenually get aa copy address button.

Don't think I have ever seen such a collection of garbage... simply god awful UI. More evidence to me that they have lost there way years ago when it became all about quartterly earnings and not creating compelling prodiucts or software.

If you don’t use Safari and iCloud Keychain, Hide My Email is much less user friendly

Sign in with Apple addresses created before the change will continue to be forwarded without interruption. Apple says developers with apps or websites that use Sign in with Apple should make sure their systems allow the private.icloud.com domain in addition to privaterelay.appleid.com.

Hide My Email is a paid iCloud feature that allows users to generate unique email addresses for each website or service, with options to deactivate and delete those addresses at any time. Hide My Email addresses are forwarded to a user's real email address, which is hidden from the site or service.

That’s great. I won’t have to go through my 306 Hide my email addresses now! Bloody amazing not sure how I got to that many maybe I need to do some pruning.

You’re either all in mate or you’re not drink the bloody Kool-Aid or get off the pot!
 
This was a really bone-headed move. Makes me concerned that the decision makers don’t understand how their product works on a fundamental level, and didn’t consult with anyone at all who understands the product before making the decision. Both are quite troubling.

Glad it ultimately got resolved, but why did it take us speaking up?

Sometimes this is why companies announce an intention, to see how the market reacts, and if there are any problems that internal discussions didn’t surface.

It’s like the beta test for a concept.

Yeah ... that's essentially what they were turning it into. The thing that makes Hide My Email so good is that no website is going to outright ban the @icloud.com domain because it's Apple and used by a buh-jillion people.

Great. Now, either remove the 750 limit, and/or improve the darned interface for deleting them. Doing so on an iPhone is absolutely brutal: every change makes the phone reload the entire list of aliases. You can't delete in bulk. It's horrible.

I agree it is difficult to use. No one would know where it was unless they were specifically looking for it, and probably googled (using duckduckgo) where to find it. It is buried under multiple layers in settings.
 
I don’t understand the challenge. When on an email address on a sign in form, there’s a Hide My Email button right above the keyboard.

Similarly, when drafting an email in Mail, there is a similar choice when picking the sending address.

Not sure how it could be easier?

The difference is that this is extremely obvious to anyone who works in web development or email marketing, and is the entire point of the feature. Apple has these people in the company.
