One tablet running Mac OS X…maybe that lends credence to the speculation of both OSes on the tablet (and only one happened to be running Mac OS X when they were seen)?

Kinda like an iPhone?
No. No one considers the iPhone a laptop replacement which is what I was talking about. The poster I was responding to claimed this rumored tablet is going to replace laptops. I don't think it will because in order to replace laptops, it has to have similar efficiency and functionality. In my opinion, using a USB or bluetooth keyboard doesn't accomplish this because there is one more device to carry with you, which answers the following:
Ever heard of USB? How about Bluetooth?

Here is my bet.. The tablet will have an optional stand that can be used as a monitor. Via Bluetooth you can hook up a keyboard and use it like a desktop.

To me that setup would be the dogs bollocks.

That'd be fantastic. I'd love just that... throw it in your bag for trips away, use it on the stand around the house/office. Companies would issue them to reps everywhere as well.

Just hope they do full OSX on it to make it as fast as it needs to be, so there is no switching apps up and down.

Lol, yeah right. Same was said about the iPhone. What's the point of hating? It makes no sense. If something works better, it just does. Millions type faster on an iPhone than they ever did on phones with push buttons. Hating is a joke, people need to stop it.

I really think you're not thinking this through. Explain to me (with a 10, 13, 15 inch device) how is it comfortable typing while standing up? It works with the iPhone because you had past metaphors on typing on smartphone devices, but with a tablet sized device with no physical keyboard? Again, how do you type on it while standing?

Would it be lame like how MS envisioned w/ their failed OMPCs? God, I really hope not.

This is the problem, at least for me. How do you type standing up and/or while walking?

Hey guys.. these products already exist from other computer companies. They have for a long time. If tablets were going to replace laptops, they already would have. If you think Apple's particular tablet is going to be revolutionary, you're kidding yourself. The iPhone isn't revolutionary either. The last revolutionary thing Apple made was the original iPod.

Hell, you can already get a Mac tablet. Modbook!

Narrowminded.... In what way is the iPhone and the App Store model not revolutionary? Who started the model that was subsequently copied by Microsoft, Google and Nokia?

Just because someone else did not do it right, doesn't mean anyone else can't do it better...

Thank You!

Either Apple has already been distributing this to the people on here fainting like tween girls at a Jonas Brothers concert or you are all about to get the biggest shock of your life.

This is the tablet Apple has been working on. You become the interface afterwards. Only side effects are extreme discomfort, dry mouth near an Apple store, kernel panicking and an increase in liver enzyme function. :D

This is the exact antidote I need after reading all these garbage on how tablet computers should even exist simply because it doesn't have a physical keyboard or "I am not a fan".

man i'd be all over a 13"... my wife and I really want something with a full OS on it that we could use aside from our desktop and keep with us... I love my iphone but some things are better done on bigger screens...

Most rumours these days have turned out to be true, so I am believing them more and more.

It's true - the tight grip Apple has always had on its product launches seems to be slipping. That being said, there are always a bunch of different rumours flying around, and you're never sure which one is legitimate. It's nice to have some sort of surprise!

I agree with you to extent... but I'm still excited about a tablet. However, no one on here has addressed the main problem with said device:

How do you type on it while standing/walking?

Remember, there's (apparently) *no* physical keyboard. On a larger device, like the supposed iTablet, I'm really curious on how they'll overcome this UI problem. Imho, I think this is the biggest reason why it's taken so long for this fabled device to come out.

:p ha

Well, if you are sitting and it is on your lap, you hold the tablet.
If it isn't made with a prop I assure you plenty of stands will be made to hold the tablet on a table.

So now, you have to carry a stand everywhere you go? Also, have you ever tried typing on something flat on your lap? Not very comfortable or even Apple-like.

Again... this doesn't even begin to address the standing/walking problem that a tablet has in terms of typing.

Funny how everyone is avoiding this very issue.

Umm.. I'll leave that to Apple to figure out. They're a great company and put out great products. I am an Apple fan obviously, but besides that fact, even if I was looking in from the outside so to speak, I would clearly be able to see that when Apple creates, they create. It's never garbage they put out hoping to fool the masses and make them believe that the garbage they hold is the be all and end all. If they do it, it will be done correctly. Look at the iPhone, one try to consistency, not 5 or ten. Everything was great with software Of the first but the design was flawed in that it broke when dropped. Now the iPhone is very visually appealing and is also like a tank.

Apparently Apple has already filled this category with a multi-touch device running full Mac OS X...

Well, naturally.

The notebook/netbook design is so stupid. It always was. With the use of touchscreen, the tablet is now poised to eradicate the laptop market in the next 5 or so years. So expect all the laptop designs to become tablets.

I disagree completely, tablets are the redundant design in my opinion. Touchscreen keyboards are a complete joke compared to what most people can do with a physical keyboard.

Also, the concept of the tablet naturally means that the device needs to be small and extremely portable. Anyone requiring a good deal of power out of their notebooks would never be satisfied with a tablet.

I don't disagree with you. I believe if this is a real product, that Apple will solved these UI issues in regards to typing. At least I hope they have! :)

However, it is a significant problem. I'm very hyped about a tablet, but unless Apple solves these UI issues, I'm still skeptical on whether or not it will be successful.

I can imagine a 13 or 15 inch tablet would be very good in a place like a kitchen.

I would mount it under a cabinet, then it can serve video, act as the control to iTunes serving music in the kitchen. It can become a quick point of reference for weather, news, recipes etc.

No need for a keyboard to get in the way, just use the touch screen....

Sure... works great in that type of environment, but a tablet is also supposed to be portable. So again:

1.) How do you type while standing up/walking?
2.) When you are away from home/work, how do you type when seated?

ridiculous

I think some people apparently seem to have romanticized ideas of the very first tablets some years ago where people would draw or handwrite in it--looked so cool at the time right?

Ahem...yes and that would get old very quickly. The reason the iPhone works as a mini tablet device is its small size--the lack of a physical keyboard isn't a problem due to the limited scope of typing and that it can be done with one hand standing up, walking, sitting down--you get the point. Plus you look to the virtual keyboard. In a real laptop size keyboard most people don't look down to their keyboards when typing, it makes for very fast writing. You can't do that with a laptop-sized tablet. Any virtual keyboard would take up first of all half the screen like it does in an iphone, half the screen! it would mean you would have to have your eyes on the keys and not the monitor since there is no touch feedback. nobody would claim writing a 3 page document on the iphone is better and easier and faster than on a keyboard. You woudld need a stand of some sorts for correct viewing angle unless the thing was always in your lap. It simply makes no sense as a laptop replacement. Plus carrying around a 3 piece tablet (tablet, stand and keyboard) is about as "forward" looking as buying a Pentium computer and claiming because it has 4.5 GHz it's faster. A laptop is one piece.

What can you do with a tablet that u cant with a laptop? what advantages are there? The only ones i can think of are again, drawing with your finger or stylus and handwriting. Wow, I am so very impressed.

The people clamoring for a tablet clearly haven't thought out what it would entail or why it would supposedly make it a superior product than a laptop.

Well...

This topic has a bunch of rumors flying around that Apple is going to make multiple sizes of the tablet. Not saying that it isn't possible, but we are all just going to have to wait and see what Steve plans to do with it. He's been working on it for a damn decade, the man is trying his best to wow us, which he does effortlessly by the way. But, to admit, Gizmodo does have some reliable sources I must say. 

Just think about this: what is the purpose of a touch screen? If your current laptop or desktop was also a touch screen, would you want to touch it? I wouldn't. The purpose, so far, has been for small portable devices like the iPhone where it's not practical to have a keyboard and mouse. A 10" tablet, for the purposes of being portable, would be the largest I'd want to go and not have a keyboard and mouse. As it is, you have to hold that with one hand and type with the other. Would you really want to lay a tablet on a table or your thighs and interact with it looking straight down, straining your neck? That's the only way to to do it if you want to type with both hands without a separate keyboard. Don't be surprised if Apple does not come out with one as large as 10".

Finally! Someone is stating reality (and in a much more concise way than me! thank you!)

I personally am excited about a Tablet, but like this post says... Apple has a TON of hurdles.

Let me get this straight..people are justifying this keyboard-less device by telling us to "well prop it up" and "attach a keyboard via bluetooth" well... wouldn't that basically make it a laptop again?
