Honestly if they don't back-port this to the iPhone 7, 6S etc I'll be majorly pissed and might never buy another iPhone and I'm serious.

There is absolutely no reason on this earth an "enhanced siri" cannot be put on our older iPhones. We have the dual mics and processing power.
"Enhancements" could mean improved/additional microphones or a dedicated chip for local processing. There's always a knee-jerk reaction of indignity when Apple restricts a new feature to new hardware, and it almost always turns out that there is a legitimate technical reason for the restriction.

Will Siri make the streets less crowded?

Google does *exactly* this for me. It directs me away from traffic jams and onto quieter streets, meaning I face less crowding, and the others on that main road benefit as well.

Artificial intelligence has a tremendous amount to offer, and we're only beginning to find out what.

I think that local processing power might be part of it, but on the other hand Google manages to use cloud computing for sufficiently quick and accurate responses that this might not be the bottleneck.

Siri is presently useless for me since it gives too many stupid answers and is unable to help with the settings of iOS, etc.
Siri is amongst those stupids robots which are supposed to assist us but are almost always wrong and thus a waste of time. E.g.:
Spelling checker : another stupid robot which replaces tiny spelling errors with BIG errors. A main cause of misunderstanding.
Mail.app Anti Spam : stupid enough to sometimes spam messages from Apple or the Apple Store.
Surely, I would prefer an improved text editor in Mail.app
- that would be able to correctly format messages received from every other mailer application,
- that would not introduce unwanted double line spacing
- that would not make inserted lines sometimes jump above or below adjacent lines.
- etc.
Surely, I would prefer an improved Contact.app letting me re-order phone numbers and addresses.
Etc.
I wonder if the Apple staff really do use Apple's softwares. If yes, how comes they never corrected these long standing errors that bugg everybody (not a minority) all the time.

I find that Siri is dreadfully slow on anything other than the current generation of device. I don't even use it on my 6+ because all it does is load that damn bar going back and fourth and sometimes it just closes after that. If it only works 6/10 times, it's not worth using.

My 'hit' rate with Siri is about 3/10. More frustrating than helpful.

LOL

Siri is now so far behind the competition... better give it up, Apple, and focus on desktop Mac again.

Because Google's assistant which runs circles around Siri needs a new chip to work right? Listen to yourself, don't be ridiculous.

Whenever Siri becomes faster than me actually performing the action, that's when I'll start to use it.

Ah so wait? iPhone 7 will not benefit from those? Sounds strange especially that the AI i server based and not running on your device.
Well, from a technical standpoint, I'm sure I'm missing something. As for in general, Apple's done this with the iPhone 5... the iOS update only granted Siri for that, but not the iPhone 4s

Curious... any chance it's your internet connection that's to blame?

Lol - but it has to get you away from people before you use it...

I agree, I don't use it in a quiet place.
This kind of reminds be of when Nextel was popular about 15 years ago. I thought it was really rude when people would use it in public. No headset, and they couldn't just "talk" into the phone when doing the walkie-talkie feature, they had to yell.

My kids don't seem to mind this either, but I think as they get older their social mores will changes.

Good analogy.

I've used this example many times, but if you want to see the stark difference between Siri's capabilities and Google Now's, do a simple test.

Ask Siri for information about flights between two major cities. Now ask Google the same. One will give you a link to Orbitz. One will give you a flight schedule of available flights with pricing.
To be fair, Google is excellent in that regard because it's able to pull data from many other apps that the same person uses.

My phone has had reminders that I've got an auto payment on my gas bill, or an upcoming flight at [time] to [destination] on Wed., all from Google. I was confused by that, but realized Google is going through my Gmail again. Google just got cooler and creepier too!

Anecdotal of course, but there are two iPhones in my house. Whenever my wife or daughter uses Siri, the answer rate seems to hover around 60%. There's a lot of suggestions to use the web or it just goes into stasis. Honestly, the Google app works better and quicker on the iPhone than Siri.
Does your wife and daughter share a device or do they have their own? That would explain some of it as it would be thrown off by the changes in their voices. Of course there is also what you want the assistant to do. For me it's mostly reminders, appointments and navigating to an address already in my contacts. But if your looking stuff up, using it with 3rd party apps, or asking it to dictate anything more than a simple sentence I would totally agree with you. I can't use Siri for texting messages because when she gets one word wrong she tweaks out on me. I have an S7 for my android and S voice can't even launch apps. I couldn't get google voice working without it killing the battery.

Siri gets the country right 90% of the time for navigation but usually the wrong state. Hopefully, enhanced means same state.

Odd. When you tell her city and state she changes it? Like, if you said "navigate to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, DC" she would get it wrong?"

Any improvement will be welcome, I barely use Siri now just because its not that useful.

I feel the same way. I may be ignorant on the matter but I was watching a video of MKBHD using a Google assistant thing. He was speaking commands to it and it seemed like it wasn't anything you couldn't do with a phone?

So what makes this so much better to use than just saying "hey siri"? Am I missing the complete concept of this? I have Siri on my Apple TV, my phone, my iPad already what does a dedicated Siri box do for me?

No they each have iPhones. I don't use an iPhone. There's no voice confusion. When Siri has to be used in very specific ways just to be effective, it's kind of pointless. Especially when there are more capable competitors right in the App Store. Like I said, my wife and daughter find Google quicker and better. The only thing less capable than Siri is S Voice. I disabled it on my S5 and as soon as I got my S7 it was the first thing I disabled... along with a choice few Touchwiz features and Google apps like Books, Games, Movies, and Newstand. I currently run ADW Launcher and my S7 is cooler than a polar bears toenails. OK Google Now Assistant (whatever the hell they're calling it now) doesn't really affect my battery at all. My primary drain is cellular since I work from home 3-4 days a week.

Bam! Triple play!

Advance to level 2.
Glad someone actually saw that. I thought it was, if not clever, kinda cute. Bonus: It definitively confirmed half life.:D

My kids use it more then I do, they don't think twice about saying "Siri facetime <insert name>" in public or in any situation I guess it might be a generational thing where I'm also a little sensitive about that.
Interesting point, I think the same thing about selfies, I personally despise taking them in public, will occasionally snapchat my significant other while in private, but I see younger boys and girls taking crazy selfies without a care in the world of who is watching them.

I use Siri for commands that would otherwise take me longer to tap my way through: adding items to the grocery list, math and conversions, setting timers, starting calls/texts, and navigation. I also use it to start playing music to fit a mood, like classical, Hawaiian, etc. It is useful on the Watch.

I also use google now on my Androids. Some things it is better at. Some things Siri is better.

In reality all of the voice assistants have a lot of growing pains to go through yet. It still feels like I am giving commands to a cat via speakerphone. When the voice assistants feel more human and aware, it will undoubtedly feel more natural. I look forward to talking with Siri, not just to. Then we'll have something.

I asked her to set an alarm for an hour the other day and she set it, and then set another one, and then another one. I must have had 10 alarms by the time I stopped her. I tried it later and it did the same thing. I guess at least she is enthusiastic!!!
Hahahahah. That's funny! Did you have two devices with Siri enabled or something...?

This. That's like saying that we will be seeing improvements to Maps or that the next A-series processor will be faster than the current one. It's pretty much a given and I don't see how it is newsworthy unless the informant also has details on what new capabilities we will be seeing with Siri.

Part of the reason I think this article necessarily isn't newsworthy, but I think it's more of a blatantly obvious complaint that Siri is in need of revamping. If there's one consensus on Macrumors, it's primarily that Siri needs tuning and alterations. Especially deciphering and speed of content in which Google Voice is excelling in.

No matter what, I do feel Siri is going to be improved relatively soon. Siri is one of my favorite features on the iPhone that I use regularly, but it also can be very frustrating at times for the most simple tasks.

Why does does it have to be exclusive for the iphone 8? I thought Siri goes to Apple servers does all the calculations and come back with results to your phone
