New hardware? How about something like "HomePadOS" that can be installed on current and older iPads? A stripped down version of iOS that is fully optimised just for HomeKit, so that even on old iPads it can run fast and smooth.
I like this idea very much but Apple (nor its competitors for that matter) are concerned with environmental sustainability of their products.

Presumably it won’t be battery-powered and won’t display your personal calendar and email etc. unless it has multi-user support. The display may automatically activate by FaceID because it can’t use raise-to-wake, and having to tap would be annoying.

Lots of practical differences due to the fixed installation.
I didn't think of any of those differences you pointed out, but they make total sense.

This reminds me of what I've heard about Bill Gates' house -- I believe visitors get a card or chip to wear that will customize the area of the house they're in to their liking. Temperature, lights, music, and I think even the artwork on the screens around his house will adapt to the visitors' favorite?

No need to be a billionaire in a house worth tens of millions (or more?)!

Now you got me excited -- it would be so cool to have one or two of these in central areas of my house and have everyone be able to control the house per their liking.

I'm cooking dinner? It'll automatically sign me in with FaceID and suggest my preferred kitchen lighting, music, etc. I have no smart appliances or faucets but it could do some cool things with that, too.

My sister is crashing or house sitting? It'll recognize her face and customize everything to her liking.

Maybe even have a "visitor pass" or something like the temporary shared house on the Home app where visitors or friends can use a guest-like account and have basic controls of lighting, music, etc in certain areas?

This will do well, IF... it doesn't look like an iPad on the wall, something between the lights on the homepod, combined with actual text etc you can read would be nice.

I would think a better solution for a smart home hub, would be to put the brains of a hub into every HomePod mini or max, and/or AppleTV, since these devices normally just sit in one spot plugged in all the time.
The home hub functionality is already built into Home Pod and Mini, and Apple TV.

And those are the only 3 devices that can be set up as the home hub.

Reason is as you said, they are always at home, on WiFi, and plugged in (no battery).

Ok, but how do you power it?
Do you have to pull it from the wall and charge it every night?
Placing it near an outlet could limit use as a “wall mounted” device. I mean, I don’t want wires dangling down my walls and Apple pushing that would be unApple.

This would be great for the kitchen. Using a recipe manager that would actually stay on (assuming it has a wired power source) while you cook, could then use it to update your grocery lists. I’d probably buy one for that purpose alone, if it was sub $400.

Apple is designing a new display that will be used for smart home management purposes, reports Bloomberg. The device will be a sort of low-end iPad that can be used for controlling HomeKit devices, streaming video, FaceTime calls, and more.

It is designed to be mounted to walls or other objects using magnetic fasteners, so it will be more integrated into the home than an iPad. Such a product would compete with devices like the Meta Portal or the Echo Show from Amazon.

Past rumors from Bloomberg have described this device as something akin to the HomePod and the Apple TV, meant for home use rather than use while on the go. Apple is also considering larger smart home display options, and a product that combines an Apple TV set-top box, smart speaker, and FaceTime camera is in development, but the project has suffered setbacks.

As of right now, Apple is targeting a 2024 launch for iPad-like smart home display.

Apple is so SMART! Sell to iPad customers what is essentially another iPad, with the same parts, chips, etc., but for home automation purposes only! Cripple that capability on iPads. Cha-ching! Tim Cook, you are a GENIUS.

If you choose to use HomeKit for your home with Google or Amazon are available, lol @ you.

The problem with using an iPad for a 'family' device is that it's tied to one user. Unless you lock it down, anyone can access your message, emails, etc. It would be nice if they had an iPad-like device that is multi-user. I guess I had always hoped they would update iPadOS to enable multiple users. They went another way and created a whole new piece of hardware instead.
They enabled multi-user, you just have to set yourself up as education users. Fun hoops to jump through. They should just bring that feature to everyone.

This sounds like an Echo Show type device

I don’t use Google or Amazon. Yes, they’re more complete products - but they lack privacy. That’s my #1 reason for using HomeKit.

Set screen lock to 'never', plug the iPad into power, and voila, you have that device already!
