That's software, not hardware.
Apple is not providing a hardware non-invasive glucometer. The best you can do right now is have a Bluetooth-enabled glucometer that uploads finger-stick readings to the Health app.

The Apple Watch already provides heart rate / pulse (there's a difference?). So again, what's new?

Pulse... is pretty much a synonym for heart rate.

No it's not, it's completely in another level, the amount of valuable information a cardiologist can extract from an EKG signal is way more useful that from an heartbeat.

So maybe something like a Microsoft Band, but priced at $99.
This could be a gateway to the Apple Watch with higher end features like GPS are rumored in v2.

If apple is working on new health tracking hardware that would be excellent. Apple is after all a hardware company. Maybe they can drop the pitiful attempt at services and world domination and get back to the basics.

I really think Apple and Jeff Williams are going to push Health Kit. It's something which will be a main focus at Apple, with emphasis on providing the Most accurate and up to date health information to the User.

If Apple, or anyone else, can figure out noninvasive transcutaneous blood glucose monitoring, that is reliable and precise, that will definitely transform healthcare globally, not just for people with diabetes, but for many other situations where we check blood glucose levels.
I'm not sure how it will be possible.. it would need some new invention of technology.. but wow.. that would be amazing. (And would catapult Apple into the heart of cutting edge healthcare).

Agree completely, every diabetic in the industrialized world would buy an apple watch, and that's a lot of $$$... game changer. They should be investing every r&d resource necessary to make this happen, patent it, and reap the rewards for years to come (not to mention helping an awful lot of people).

Makes sense.

Biodata is going to be a huge market going forward, and the Apple Watch is out of reach for most people.

A simpler health/fitness tracker which is positioned between a Fitbit Blaze and the Apple Watch would sell bucketloads and be extremely useful.

Or, maybe they can achieve the same thing with AW bands which would make a lot more sense IMO.

Yes, the bands are the answer.
Now release the watch 2.0 with smart connectors and release some bands with more sensors.
The bands have the space to accommodate more and more complex sensors, so that seems the way to go.

VITALES Gives Doctors Access to Patient Health Information Before the Appointment

· The pioneering Spanish company Massive Bionics has joined Apple HealthKit to develop the new VITALES® app, now available for iPhone in the App Store.

· Doctors can access patients’ health records for the entire previous months in a convenient online graphic format, using DriCloud medical software.

Evaluate patients’ recovery progress during rehabilitation, access their heart rate and respiratory frequency during exercise, see a diabetes patient’s glucose levels, or measure their blood pressure in real time: all of this is now possible for doctors in hospitals and clinics everywhere. Massive Bionics has launched an advanced system based on Apple’s HealthKit, which allows patients to collect their own health data and send it to their clinic in real time, using DriCloud® software medico medical records software.

The result is VITALES®, an iPhone app now available for patients to download from the Apple App Store. This new app allows patients to share their medical information with their doctor using their iPhone or Apple Watch and a variety of health monitoring devices. From any computer, a doctor can rapidly see how the patient’s health has progressed before the visit, in convenient graphic displays.

What doctors and clinics can use this software?

Currently, this system is beginning to be used in large hospitals such as the Mayo Clinic and the Ochsner Clinic in the United States. But the greatest virtue of VITALES® is that it is allowing small and medium clinics in Spain, Europe, and Latin America to access the technology that has until now only been available to the biggest and most modern hospitals worldwide.

“VITALES® is a completely disruptive system that demarcates a ‘Before’ and an ‘After’ for health care. The doctor monitors and maintains constant control over the patient’s health, and the patient can now cooperate in improving their own health,” explained Dr. Enrique Galindo Martins, the Medical Director of Massive Bionics.

Uses for the VITALES® system:

1. Control and management of chronic illnesses: Including arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic respiratory insufficiency, etc. VITALES® allows doctors to monitor patients’ health metrics from a distance in real time, and make medication adjustments whenever required.

2. Weight loss: Endocrinologists can constantly measure weight change, exercise completed, calories consumed, nutrition metrics, vitamins and other supplements taken, water intake, etc.

3. Sports medicine: Exercise time, speed and distance covered; body mass index, percent body fat, and percent muscle weight; alcohol consumption, etc. All these statistics and more can be monitored through the app.

4. Reproductive health: Patients can use VITALES® to record data such as the qualities of cervical mucus, spotting, menstruation, ovulation, base body temperature, sexual activity, etc.

5. Sleep analysis.

The first population health study using VITALES®

The Madrid Traumatology Institute has begun the first health study using VITALES®, to evaluate outcomes after a total knee replacement surgery. Doctors will be able to evaluate the recovery of patients using different rehabilitation techniques, and will have access to real-time data on important indicators including distance walked, flights of stairs climbed, walking speed, fall frequency, energy consumption, hours spent standing. Cardiac and respiratory frequency are provided in association with each of these statistics. Many doctors and clinics have indicated interest in beginning to work with Massive Bionics technology to offer their patients more personalized tracking and to improve their quality of care.

The most powerful and safe way to care for illness

At every moment, patients have the power to control their information and decide what they want share with their doctor. The doctor only receives the information that the patient selects, and patient information is never shared with third parties or with Apple. All patient information is completely confidential.
