Picking up my phone to unlock my mac doesn't make anything easier. Adding a sensor to the keyboard will.
On laptops it could just be the power button, on desktops... why not putting the power button back on the keyboard again?!

Steve was still alive the day of the 4s launch. He would have contributed to that device in some way.

He was alive for one day after the iPhone 4S keynote. At that time Steve had stepped down, so it was up to Cook and the crew to present the product, which was a disappointing keynote to say the least.

It's safe to say the company has looked rather boring since Cook took over.

I don't know how it "went down"...and you certainly don't.

I'll counter with this..

"Simplicity" in Apple terms kinda means "Lazy".
Also a slap for any developers who released Apps for this "problem" as their bread and butter.

But Guys, it will mean that my iMac will be unlocked many many times per day with NO need!!! Since when I am home and I use my phone very often - the iMac will be I clocked very time this is not accept ale and secure at all.

You have locks on your front door but the police can still enter your home with a warrant. Does that mean your door locks aren't a security feature?

I never said they weren't a security feature. I'm simply stating that given the events of San Bernadino and other court cases with rulings stating that being forced to give up your password is a violation of the 5th Amendment, giving up your fingerprint isn't a violation of the 5th, and is subject to the 4th.

So if the police/government can force you to unlock your phone with a fingerprint, they can also force you to unlock your Mac via your phone with your fingerprint. That doesn't bode well with regards to securing and protecting your data.

Like I said, slippery slope.

BL.

Now Apple. You know how you've recently been rumbled for getting lazy regarding innovation and things and you said you were going to get on the case and start 'doing new stuff' instead of making new showrooms and advertisements for the old stuff and that? Well this isn't the stuff we had in mind .....

If this is as Rock Solid as recent Apple updates you'll be lucky if you don't brick your phone at the same time as locking yourself out of your iMac.

So the new functionality is not so functional. To unlock my mac, I need to get my phone, ensure its in the vacinity of the mac then unlock it. I could have typed my password 10 times.
Grow what exactly? Vegetables? Fruits?
Blutooth works from a pretty good distance on these iPhones not to mention WiFi could be an option for the local connection. I'm imagining what I usually do at my friend's house and I usually have my phone out texting as I go to work on his iMac. That's more than enough time to unlock it via Touch ID.

If you could grow an Apple tree for me, I'll pay you double the amount I reserved for the non existent Skylake MacBook Pro :D

Apologies if this has been answered, but:

Does anybody know if the newer Force Touch trackpads have any sort of hardware that could potentially be re-engineered from a software level to read a fingerprint?

I figure the older trackpads (pre-2015) will be a lost cause.

Seriously? Putting a finger print sensor INTO the computer is too much work is it? For the cost they charge too. I can't even remember how long PC laptops have had them for it's been so long, and this is Apples solution?

It may be better then nothing but come on.

Unfortunately, the hardware is not capable of reading fingerprints

A fingerprint sensor in the Mac tied to Keychain.
One touch login for ALL your passwords, not just the Login screen...

That would be a thing of beauty.

Apparently it's too much work according to a couple of members on this thread.

Honestly, I hope this is temporary and there will be a fingerprint sensor built into Macs. Not everyone has iPhones, and most importantly, I'm not about to pull out my phone to unlock it, open an app, then fingerprint it again. Might as well enter my 6-digit password because that's about as secure my computer needs to be since nobody even has access to it.

This makes sense, and Apple's usual route. Just like the iPhone and iPad were initially tied to the Mac, and the Watch to the iPhone. Give it to the existing customer base first, while simultaneously giving non-iPhone users a reason to buy a Mac.

My phone is usually sitting right next to my Mac when I'm working, so that's not a problem at all.

This is something I've wanted to see since it was introduced, except by putting it into something like the keyboard.

Try the MACID App, Ive been using the for awhile it is great! Unlock with your iPhone, has proximity detection to lock unlock mac when you walk away or come to it.

EXACTLY! Think about shopping on Amazon and using your finger print scanner on your computer or iPad or iPhone to log in and buy things. So easy and fast.. yet we still don't have it.

You really think it would require opening an app? I'm pretty positive it would be built into continuity.

You don't have any points.

"Cook is the CEO Apple needs right now." Based on....?

"Apple is doing better under Cook than they did under Jobs." Again, based on what..?

I gave you points. Cloud is better now than ever. AM was something Jobs seemed to be against. Apple is diversifying in a way they weren't before.

We don't have it? try MacID. I see some other apps in the section below too. So yes we have it, those leading edge guys beat us to thinking about it again.

I don't even understand how your post has 5 likes.

The way apps like Mac ID work, the app senses when you are within range of your linked Mac. If I walk out of range, it automatically locks your Mac. When you walk back within range, a push notification is sent to your phone. You can access the option to unlock your Mac via a quick reply function from the lock screen, and the act of unlocking your phone via Touch ID is enough to unlock the Mac.

Not to mention that Apple should be able to further refine this method given their ability to integrate both hardware and software.

I am also seeing the possibilities to unlock your Mac via your Apple Watch in the same manner.

I like the app for when I am at work. Say I want to leave my seat for any reason. My Mac automagically locks when I walk beyond a certain distance without me needing to do anything.

The main drawbacks I see is that Bluetooth is sill quite unreliable. Sometimes, I can be seated at my desk and the app just goes haywire and keeps sending me repeated unlock notifications despite me not moving at all.

I ended up deleting the app because it was proving too frustrating and annoying, but I loved the concept behind it.
