Apple is working on a redesigned Magic Mouse that will address some "longstanding complaints," according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said Apple in recent months has been working on a "full overhaul" of the Magic Mouse with a design that "better fits the modern era." However, he does not expect the new Magic Mouse to be released in the "next 12 to 18 months," so it sounds like the accessory will launch in mid-2026 at the earliest.

While the Magic Mouse switched from Lightning to USB-C a few months ago, the charging port is still located on the bottom of the mouse, which prevents it from being used while charging. This is only a minor inconvenience, as charging the mouse is a quick and infrequent process, but it sounds like Apple will finally relocate the port.

"Apple is looking to create something that's more relevant, while also fixing longstanding complaints — yes, including the charging port issue," said Gurman.

He also suggested the next Magic Mouse will be more ergonomic and comfortable to use.

While no specific design details about the next Magic Mouse were shared, perhaps Apple will take some inspiration from popular alternatives for the Mac, like Logitech's excellent MX Master 3S. That mouse features an ergonomic design with a thumb rest, a front-facing USB-C charging port, precision tracking, two scroll wheels, and more.

The overall look of the Magic Mouse has not changed much since 2009, so a redesign has been a long time coming. Notable changes over the years include the mouse switching from AA batteries to a built-in rechargeable battery in 2015, new color-matching options with the iMac in 2021, and the switch from Lightning to USB-C this year. Overall, the Magic Mouse has not received much attention from Apple over the past decade.

Will the next Magic Mouse cost more? No word on that from Gurman, yet. The current model is priced at $79 in the U.S. on a standalone basis, and it is included at no additional cost with the purchase of an iMac or a Mac Pro.

Two lesser requested but important features for a ‘modern’ mouse:

High polling rate for smooth, responsive cursor motion on high refresh displays (120-480Hz+)
Haptic feedback (Taptic Engine) I’m sure this could be a strong point of OS UI innovation as well as extending game-controller-only feedback to mouse input

I'm amazed the charging port caused more controversy than the atrocious ergonomics

That was always my issue with it. Don't really care about the charging port location (though admit it isn't great design), and I liked the gestures (which I'm sure the new mouse will have too). But the ergonomics just didn't work for me. Uncomfortable to use compared to almost any other mouse option.

The charging port location is about the least worst thing about it for me, I hope they redesign it from every atom up.

It feels weird having to hover a finger to properly right click, and there's no simultaneous left/right click which is a bit more esoteric but some apps can use.

The sensor and wireless stack are just abysmal now though, they never updated it in all the refreshes from the 15 year old sensor, it feels bad and skippy and once you use a good mouse you realize you weren't bad at aiming at fine targets, the mouse was. Check Rtings on the Magic Mouse 2 if you think that's dramatic. It never advanced past first generation laser let alone something better like Bluetrack or Darkfield which work much better on many different materials. The wireless stack is almost surely the most sluggish you can get for the price this year.

The Logi will be tough to beat but literally anything is better than the current MM. I just replaced my parents Apple keyboard and mouse with the MX products because their Apple keyboard battery swelled. The thing they can't stop talking about is the MX mouse and how much better it feels.

It's a "minor inconvenience" in theory, but in practice, the battery typically gets low at an unexpected moment, and it interrupts your work. You end up getting into a habit of having to proactively charge your mouse. These are issues you don't think about with other mice because if the battery gets low, you just plug it in and keep working.

The fact that it's such a small but recurring annoyance is what makes it more annoying--it's a small thing they could have gotten right but didn't.

I must be in the great minority. I likes the Magic Mouse just fine as is.
Even if you like the shape, this sensor and wireless stack are just working against it and about the worst you can get in a mouse this expensive this year, as has been the case for years.

It tracks poorly, it skips, it's imprecise, I'm convinced defenders of this mouse have never felt a good mouse sensor lol

Took Apple only 100+ years to invent the USB-C port for iPhones - but 150+ years to fix the charging port for „Migthy Mouse“.

There is definitely a market for a “Magic Mouse Pro” that has some customization abilities, a true clickable scroll wheel and a more comfortable design like the MX Master. Then again, there’s also a big market for a Magic Trackpad pro with Apple Pencil support.

Both options seem like no brainers.
