Apart from the myriad of privacy concerns, all of these products are ‘nice to haves’.

ie none of them have urgent compelling use cases behind them.

As another commenter pointed out, a display in the glasses - which it’s not going to get - would be useful to have for naps and notifications.

But even then it serves the 1st world problem of:

‘so you don’t have to look down at your phone and/or listen to notifications on your AirPods.’

Aside from that, they appear to do nothing much that your iPhone and your AirPods couldn’t do.

At this moment in tech, the AI magic is in the software and the cloud, really.

AirPods with cameras doesn't seem to make sense... yet smart glasses are effectively AirPods with cameras... I think these are likely POCs / development platforms for the same, single product.

At some point I'm half expecting new laws governing the use of glasses with cameras in them due to privacy concerns, or locations where recording is prohibited.

I for one do not consent to being recorded.
Good thing you're keeping those expectations at half, that way you can other-half expect the same for cell phone cameras. 🙂 All kidding aside, I agree - it's incredibly off-putting to have a conversation with someone knowing they're recording you, or at minimum, sending live video of you back to the mothership. I'm not a fan, and I too think there's going to be backlash.

At any rate, the glasses without any display seems like a waste (not that it stopped meta), but that'll probably come in Gen 2. The AirPods are really the most logical application of AI-on-the-go. I always have them handy, and I'm wearing them a ton anyway. The pin is a little goofy, but I do love Star-Trek, so sure, let's fly our geek flags, why not.

I'm trying to imagine what law you expect to exist where you need to consent to be recorded. No one has to ask your permission to take pictures in public, or in a theme park, or anywhere else where you might intentionally or incidentally end up in the frame. And that isn't going to change.

Hey Apple, you can not releases ‘smart’ glasses without a display in them. That is not the kind of move you want to be making.
Uh, actually smart glasses without a display is EXACTLY what I want. I don't want fake vision. I want actual vision. I don't want to be looking at screens 1 inch away from my eyes with cameras feeding me a latent view of the world. I want clear lens that I can see through like any other glasses, and if that limits the features for now, so be it. visionOS is nothing but a tech demo until it is a true AR experience...not fake AR using video passthrough.

This product will not have AR capabilities at launch, because the technology is just not there yet. Not when trying to fit it into a pair of glasses that aren't insanely heavy or require massive batteries.

From the company that touts “privacy” at every turn.

And the faithful are all-in.

Fascinating
Yeah... I'd really like to know who are creating the anti-surveillance tech to counter all these cameras. Because, that's where my money is going.

I don't care for any of the AI or reading emails, but I DO WANT a display function for all those times when I want data in real time but do not want to handle a phone. Imagine golfing with glasses that provide yardage in the lens or that function as a launch monitor to calculate swing speed and ball speed -- or show appropriate alignment or show the likely break on a putt. Or maybe a visual for the best line for a hairy descent on a bike. Or for skiing. Lots of real possibilities for sports. Or a virtual tape measure or laser level for contractors and homeowners alike.

Yep, I just can't wait until nearly everyone starts looking like this.

Then, maybe, six months later, we'll take this crap off forever and go back to natural, human eye contact.

I know, I know...I'm starting to show my age.

They’re really chasing the “next big thing” aren’t they? Well, good luck to them. I can’t fault them for trying.
